Just read that Brad Pitt has paused filming on F1 blockbuster in support of Hollywood strikes.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt16311594/?ref_=nm_flm...

"Follows a Formula One driver who comes out of retirement to mentor and team with a younger driver". Doesn't that sound very similar to the Sylvester Stallone film Driven https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0132245/?ref_=nv_sr_s...
I know Driven was supposed to be a about F1 but got changed to CART Champ Cars

Is this the first time you've come across the concept?

It was explained to me for the first time a few weeks ago. I was most taken aback.

Motorsport and narrative film is a borderline guaranteed graveyard, with a handful of honourable exceptions, but let's see.

If Brad was serious he would've had a minimum of 50% Baseball in the story. For some reason that sport suits film down to the ground.

The idea isn't new.

Sylvester Stallone had intended to do pretty much the same thing with an F1 movie back in 2000; shooting amongst the real races. IIRC, Benetton had agreed to race one of their cars in livery to match the story of the film. Was heavily supported by Ecclestone but less so the FIA and the teams. He ended up making 'Driven' based upon Champ Car.

And misspelled the title - should have been called Drivel smile

What's different about the Brad Pitt one is the degree with which F1, the teams and the FIA have been involved with with it. Whether this translates into something entertaining, only time will tell.

He was actually taking about it with Bernie in 93/94, but as you say it didn't get anywhere.

I have a close friend’s son working on the Brad Pitt film, he is spending serious time at Silverstone and they have blown millions due to sponsorship issues and changing logos. Will the final edit be my good. I believe not. Straight to streaming most likely not a cinema success.

I can imagine being Brad Pitt and walking around a paddock where everyone is in awe of you must help a bit with the old confidence..... I'd imagine those 'people that are' were asking for his autograph and having an exciting day in the 'office' rather than the other way around...

A sixty year old racing driver (who had to quit F1 in the 90s due to an injury) persuaded to return to F1 racing to help a young driver, so believable. His knowledge from the 1990s F1 racing must be so relevant to 2024.

This should have Tom Cruise in it, not Brad Pitt, ‘He used to be an F1 driver, a pretty good F1 driver till a crisis of confidence…’ etc.

It seems pretty much an F1 version of Stallones 'Driven'*, which was itself supposed to be set in F1 but the whole circus was much less media friendly back then so told him to do one (I think).

It could be okay. With some team and driver involvement it might not be totally wild, though the basic premise sounds somewhat unbelievable. I guess we've had some reasonably decent racing films in recent history though, ie Rush and Ford V Ferrari, so I'm quietly optimistic.

  • Driven is almost universally derided, but I thought it was reasonably entertaining
