Being as we have a Barbie thread, shall we do an Oppenheimer one assuming none already exists?

I saw it last night and quite enjoyed it.

I found it slightly hard to follow the complexity of the relationships between the characters and their motivations. I kept asking myself who is he, and why does he dislike him etc. You need to pay quite close attention else you can miss the dynamics between characters.

It was very dialogue heavy, particularly in the first and final thirds.

I was hoping to see more explosions, and it was dissapointing how they glossed over the actual Japanese bombings in about 60 seconds when I feel examining and maybe showing that should have been the crescendo. The scene where they do the final test hits hard but it needed more of that to bring it the magnitude to life.

Visually it’s a beautiful film and it did manage to keep my interest for the whole 3 hours.

Cillian Murphy was brilliant.

8/10 for me. I was hoping for something slightly different I think.

It is a highly-anticipated film, so some spoiler alert formatting might be more appropriate.

Anyway, I watched it in IMAX today and left feeling similar. I did notice that the black and white scenes were subjective, whereas the colour scenes were objective. Once I'd cracked that, the dynamics and relationships became a little easier to understand. I'm told that every B&W scene in an IMAX-shot film before has been done in post production, but a B&W IMAX film was specially created for Oppenheimer.

I was hoping for some poignant messages or film at the very end before the credits, but it just ended with disappointingly little about the two bombs dropped on Japan, or Oppenheimer's further life. Perhaps it's meant to send one away thinking, and to do ones own further research on it.

Little action happens other than dialogue for what felt like aaaages, then it gets moving fast when they start assembling the bomb at Los Alamos. There were enough explosions and noise for my liking, but the suspense of knowing that a massive explosion is coming after the great flash was quite gripping. When that happened a few times after however, it grew a little tiring anticipating the explosion to make you jump.

I would see it again.

I went to see it today on IMAX and really enjoyed it. Looked fabulous. More of a documentary, perhaps naturally, than I was expecting. I’ve read a few books on the Manhattan project so was reasonably familiar with the story but my son found it a bit confusing. Was a bit slow to get going and, at 3 hours, felt a tad on the long side.

Some exceptional work from Murphy and Downie Jr. Cinematography was fantastic, really beautiful. Soundtrack good but I think Hans Zimmer might have made it more memorable.

Having said all that, I enjoyed it but didn’t love it.

Went to see it last night and really enjoyed it.

I had purposely avoided reading anything about it in terms of the style of the film so wasn't sure what to expect. As others have said it is very dialogue heavy which for 3 hours is definitely not going to be for everyone such as the two young lads walking out in front of me who said it was the most boring film they've seen. Visually excellent and the acting top notch.

It is an amazing part of history and there was a lot which I didn't know. It's the first time I've been to the cinema in 4 or 5 years and I don't remember it being so loud, when the sound from the first explosion hit I nearly ruined my pants.

Definitely a must watch for anyone who likes their war history or anything science based. Perhaps not so much if you go to the cinema to be entertained.

I didn’t know what to expect from it, other than it had been well reviewed.

An interesting story and it certainly held my interest for the 3 hours. I suppose a bit like the ‘Imitation game’ but for A-Bombs.

Definitely need to concentrate throughout to try and follow the relationships.

Cast were all very good.

Only negative were the clowns next to me who decided to bring sandwiches wrapped in tin foil and seemingly chose to open them only in the quiet bits. Then delve into the bottom of their bag of sweets. Cinema ruined by other people. Had hoped for empty cinema on earliest showing!

Went to see it in IMAX yesterday. I didn't know much of the story myself other than the basics, so it was an interesting film to see the relationships between him and the others at the different stages. As said already it's talk heavy and you have to concentrate, it won't be one to watch at home while other stuff is going on or doomscrolling on your phone/iPad.

Also, yay for practical, miniature and in camera effects. I did stay through the credits and the nearest it got to listing CGI was a few people doing digital work, they layered a few films of the explosions to get them looking bigger https://www.businessinsider.com/how-christopher-no...

Seems to like telling stories you already know. Secret sauce is jumbling up the timeline. Generally find his films annoying but
having watched his first one recently I may revisit them. The key there is it was an original story so kept me hooked.

How is the volume of music etc.?

I've given up going to the cinema because I find the sound levels almost painful, and Nolan has a reputation for loud music in every scene.

Yes it was very loud, a bit unnecessarily so at points

Did you go to one of the IMAX 1570 screens? Was it noticeably different if so

I don't know, and I don't know how I'd find the spec of an IMAX screen. It was the Cineworld in Broughton.

Why do they do that?

Honestly thought it was a big disappointment tbh. Not sure why it's getting the great reviews it's getting as it's a film you watch once and never would want to watch again.

The first half of the film was very good but then after the trial explosion it became a dialogue heavy snooze fest. Very confusing in parts knowing what they were on about or who was against who or why....also can't believe never got to see the bomb going off in Japan.

Bit of a snoozefest all an all and instantly forgettable. Murphy was excellent though although Matt Damon stole the show for me. 6 out of 10.

There's only 3 in the UK. Two in London and one in Manchester

I agree it was too loud, as are a lot of movies nowadays. When I go with my kids to Cineworld they take headphones as ear defenders!

Also agree on the chav factor in cinemas. I usually go to Everyman on weekday mornings which is fairly upmarket and usually half empty, but this was a packed Odeon on a Friday night. People were constantly looking at phones, talking, rummaging around for food, getting up to go for a pee and I think accidentally wandering in whilst looking for the Barbie movie. Painful!
