Freddie Flintoff "Field of Dreams"
Discussion
First one last night. Attitudes of the kids just what's seen in kids from underprivileged areas who make it to university. They just don't realise they need help, won't accept it when it's offered, have to bite your lip, the social divide is not recognised.
Comment from one of those watching it last night, that we also don't recognise we're another side of that social divide. Couldn't name a single England football player, eventually dragged up Harry Kane, yet could name several of the current England test team and someone from local county squad. Doesn't actually follow either sport. Also completely identified with the crowd associated with the VSCC Herefordshire Trial on Top Gear.
Fair do's to Andrew and Co, need patience of a saint with some of that lot. But build it, and they will come, indeed.
Continuing to watch with fascination.

BBC screwed the schedules again, due to fking Wimbledon doubtlessly, so missed half of this. Grrrr. Cancelled recording. Why do they do this? I haven't got access to iPlayer...
Can’t you download the app?Newarch said:
I really enjoyed the show. Quite surprised there were no girls in it though, unless there was an issue with safeguarding. There’s increasing numbers of unisex teams in village and club cricket now so it wouldn’t have been tokenism or anything like that.
They explained in the episode that the women's England team is very representative of all social classes, whereas the mens team is two thirds from a private school background, hence they were concentrating on the mens game and getting lads from less privileged backgrounds involved in it.Gargamel said:
I thoroughly enjoyed it, Freddie seems to be a decent coach, encouraging and positive and just pushing people to try something and do more.
Thought it was a little short on showing basic skills being taught (like fielding) But still, a good watch.
Whilst he's gone up in my estimation, certainly moving away from the "just one of the lads out for a raucous giggle" persona, interested to see whether the project would really benefit from someone used and trained to getting engagement from such as these kids.Thought it was a little short on showing basic skills being taught (like fielding) But still, a good watch.
Or will it show that such an approach is by its nature and method the very thing that's turned these kids off in the past and by Andrew not taking this professional youth leader stance the results are in the end better.
What it does need is a couple of the older lads to take on a leader from the front type role, better still if they have some definite cricketing ability.
Ben, the fat lad, sorry no other way of putting it , is definitely still well in his hanging back out of the limelight shell, what's the betting he's been subject to a fair bit of abuse or scoffing in the past. Could be wrong, but hope he does well.

Don't forget you're watching a very heavily edited programme from probably hundreds of hours of footage so hard to know any of the finer details as to who was more or less involved.Or will it show that such an approach is by its nature and method the very thing that's turned these kids off in the past and by Andrew not taking this professional youth leader stance the results are in the end better.

I thought it was really good and that's coming from someone who doesn't watch any cricket or hadn't particularly warmed to Freddie but massive kudos to him for investing his time in these kids who come from the same background more or less that he did. Also it's a 6 month commitment from him too.
I thought he was great in his approach in trying to cajole the yoot to get the best out of them and how he actually managed to get them to play a match against the old codgers too!
He'll build up a brilliant bond with this group and i'm sure they'll benefit from being on this show, even if it only serves to give them a bit of drive and show them that there's more to life than hanging about in the woods with a few bottles of diamond white (or whatever they're into these days!)

Surprisingly easy to get £200k out of a catch strapped council
Adnan must be almost 30
Wasn't the sports club already in public ownership, therefore the case could be made that the funds are helping to rescue a failing public business / operation. The funds will have already been available earmarked for a type of qualifying project and this qualified.Adnan must be almost 30
Dunno about Adnan, but as said earlier what the project really needed was an older player, in attitude mainly years somewhat irrelevant, to show the way.
Can't imagine any of that local shower walking and hitching across Europe.
Also programme alleges that cricket is the most elitist sport. Really? Polo? Lacrosse? Equally maybe we, royal we, don't appreciate our privilege. That's not meant as some right on PC comment, just an appreciation that as coming from single parent family after Dad died, free school meals, school uniform vouchers etc there were still a lot of inherent advantages compared to many.

Don't know why you're nit picking, cricket is dominated by middle and upper classes. Although possibly not the most elitist, it is up there.Dunno about Adnan, but as said earlier what the project really needed was an older player, in attitude mainly years somewhat irrelevant, to show the way.

Adnan, what a story regardless of his actual age he's been through the mill and looks t have come out the other side.
Great programme, they really could and should have strung it out for a few more episodes to see how the lads progress rather than rolling 4 months forward during last night's episode.
Hat's off to Freddie, he's put the effort in with time and dedication and pledged a fair whack of cash too (tax deductible or not!!). That young lad who is close to going off the rails is very high maintenance but it will be a great success story if Freddie and the team can get him on the right track

The word I was questioning in this context is the use of 'most'. Which you seem to agree isn't the case.
I'll have to take your word from it if they did indeed say it was the 'most' elitist sport - it blatantly isn't!Great show though, looking forward to next week's finale!
Oh, that's a shame. I thought it would be a longer series, was looking forward to watching the difference the cash made to that cricket club happen in more than a one hour show!
