Great show. You might need a VPN for HBO Max if in the UK though...

Just watched the first 5 episodes of this - it's excellent. BBC have acquired the rights for this and will be shown in the UK later this year.

Season two, HBO MAX, promises to be as good as ever.

I recently watched the first series, finding it a fascinating insight to Japanese culture, would love to know how accurate the depiction of the Japanese underworld is.

One criticism, I think it would have benefited from subtitles throughout, I doubt many it the Japanese justice system or the Yakuza speak English, using subtitles would have lent it more authenticity.

Just watched series, 2 episode 4, this is shaping up to be just as good, if not better than series 1.

Would still like subtitles.

I'm still not in agreement though. laugh

Plenty of the characters only speak Japanese to each other with subtitles.

I've just binged both series over the last few days. Excellent, especially if you like crime and Japan. It has you wondering how much, if any of it, is true though.

Generally, I think it’s quite difficult to know how authentic it is, as the types of criminal organization portrayed are rather secretive. However, Japanese society is very structured and I doubt organised crime is any different.

See https://gangmentality.com/yamacuchi-gumi/ for structure.

The involvement of the Japanese police and their toleration of the Yakuza up to certain point, is to be expected. Like any crime organization, they keep their miscreants policed; which in the eyes of the police is a good thing, therefore, quite understandable.

It often raises a smile on my part, when posters on here say “How wonderful they Japanese society is” I’m sure a lot of it is, but equally, it’s probably very frustrating if you have to work within a society with such norms.

We've just finished S2 on iPlayer after enjoying S1 a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed it, lots of great characters with their own struggles to work through in the context of the wider story. I doubt it's a totally realistic portrait of the underworld, but the depiction of Japanese culture made it a lot more interesting than your typical cop show.

Did I detect a bit of an homage to the Sopranos "Pine Barrens" episode when Sato and his boss go off to buy some guns ?
