Just seen a trailer for 'Grace' based on the series of 'dead' crime novels set in Brighton, following the investigations of SI Roy Grace. Big fan of the novels, about halfway through the series I think. Hope the series does the stories justice, only drawback is it stars John 'always angry and intense' Simms. The main character in the book is far less shouty and aggressive than the trailer of Simm playing his usual character shows.
Any other fans of the books looking forward to this?

Does the first book in the series have someone getting buried as a stag do prank, then the people who buried him die in a car crash?

If so, I enjoyed the book.

Yeah that's it. The series gets better as they go on, one had a bit of a rubbish ending but otherwise all good. I'm about 9 through, think there are 15ish.

All schedule says is late spring or early summer. 2x 2hr episodes covering first two books dead simple and looking good dead. Hopefully will be as good as the books, reading I've always thought they'd adapt to TV well.

Something to look forward to... I wonder when they will confirm the broadcast dates?

Oh good, I also enjoy the books and will look forward to this, even though John Simm doesn't fit my imagination of Roy Grace in the same way that Stephen Tompkinson didn't fit my vision of Alan Banks. I enjoyed DCI Banks, though, so probably a good job I'm not in casting.

Thanks for that. thumbup

I've read most of the books so it will be interesting to see how the TV adaptations work.

I think Grace would be Stephen Dillane from The Tunnel:

But with an Alfa instead of an old Merc.

Starts this sunday at 8pm. Looking forward to it. If you haven't read the books definitely give this a try, great stories and characters, hope the tv adaptation does the books justice.

I enjoyed that. I've read the book, but fortunately couldn't remember any of the detail, either from the point of view of spoiling the outcome, or comparing the two.

No clue on when the next one airs, though. I think I read somewhere (maybe even here, I can't see the rest of the thread at the moment) that they've adapted two stories.

Going to go against the grain here. Very disappointed in last night's offering. Ridiculous plot twists and wooden acting. Andy Cole should have stuck to football as he was rubbish as that police detective.

I've not read the books, so can't compare to the original, but I enjoyed the episode. It seemed to have the right level of ploy complexity, clues and red herrings to keep my interest. I was fairly cold to watching it, but will look out for it next time.

I could have done without the senior police officer doing the 'make one more mistake and you're out!' spiel, which seems to be the current go-to meme for writing senior officers nowadays.

Also, I was oddly excited to see the Midsummer Murders trailer for next week. As crap as Midsummer is, I find it comfortable, and reassuring Sunday night TV, so I'm looking forward to it.

I have read some of the books, and this was not very good at all. I can imagine the conversation between John Simm and his agent, "another copper part, well, if there's nothing else going". No-one looked they could be particularly bothered and I gave up halfway through.

Have not watched yet. Love the books and usually prefer books to tv adaptions, they are never normally as good

Very wooden. They spent most of the casting budget on John Simm and it was obvious.

Oh oh

Had 'high hopes' for this versus the McDonald and Dodds /MacDonald and Dodds (which I cannot even be bothered to find which version - if either is correct, as it was just so dire).

Anyway, recorded last night's first episode - with a view to it being a good couple of hours of telly.

Now I am stealing myself to be let down. Back to the Midsomer Murders/Miss Marple/Poirot (etc) repeats I guess...
