YouTube Premium
Discussion
Hi
Not sure if TV is the correct section or Computers/gadgets so mods please move where appropriate.
Does anybody here use YouTube premium? I spend quite a lot of time streaming music or watching videos on there and their frequency of adverts has pushed me to breaking point. Which I guess it is designed to do.
Interested in experiences etc... I would need more than one account, so I guess I’d be looking at the family account?
Thanks

You can get YT premium really cheaply if you use a VPN whilst setting up your account
https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/youtube-premium-p...
Which works out at £1.13 a month.
I used a previous deal (and had to use a chinese address) and it costs me £1.33 a month.

I've been using it for a while. Was great when commuting as could download content to my phone to watch on the train without using all my data allowance.
I've kept it going post covid as both the kids watch a lot of youtube stuff on their tablets as well as on the TV. Combined I think we watch more youtube than any of the other streaming providers (prime, netflix, bbc iplayer etc) so i see it as good value.

I have premium for a negligible sum. Worth it for removing the ads.

I've been a Premium member for several years - the reason is to support the content creators, they deserve to be paid. Losing the ads was just a bonus.
they get paid plenty as it isfbc said:
Maybe the really huge creators do, but the average to smaller ones don't. And even if they were being paid well, I'm still consuming the content they've created, so of course I should pay them for that.
I am not sure it makes a huge difference between ad rev or Youtube premium for what creators get paid. When Youtube Red was a thing Creators got paid a load over normal ad sense but not sure that continued. wastedyouth86 said:

If it works out mostly equal then it's still a win since I'm enjoying the content ad-free and the creators are still being supported, as they deserve to be. Besides, I prefer to support the creators I follow as directly as I can, hence why I'm also a member on some channels and additionally support them via Patreon.
If I thought it would get me out of the modern media echo chamber I'd happily pay for it. Repetitive reinforcement and confirmation bias is unhelpful.
It's so frustrating getting fed the same/similar content all the time. As soon as I watched a couple of videos for boots, my suggested content became boot-related. When I watch a couple of MMA videos that's now added to my 'preferences'.
It's worse when viewing controversial topics, such as COVID and/or vaccine related content. As soon as I view a sceptical channel I no longer see the rational viewpoint. The same goes for health/diet related content. Watch a few videos on veganism and it seems to decide I no longer want to see carnivore related content, or keto, or whatever else is available.
I appreciate they're trying to guess what my interests are, but they're getting it wrong - I try to view/understand all viewpoints so it's important to me that I don't view one side only. Pretty sure that's why we're seeing so many extreme views in the community.

Can you change your preferences to not have Youtube curate suggestions for you (I honestly don't know)It's so frustrating getting fed the same/similar content all the time. I've paid for a while, mostly to avoid ads. The 5 second skippable ones at the start were a minor irritation but the unskippable ones and ones that came mid-video were just a pain. I watch more youtube than TV so don't bemoan the cost really. A bit going to creators is nice too although I support some via patreon anyway.
Music streaming is good - was using the google play music, now it's all consolidated into YT music. Mobile apps / carplay in the car / Sonos at home.
Have also had a free Google Nest and now a free Stadia controller with a Chromecast Ultra out of it too. Google seem to like pushing hardware that's not selling so well into YT Premium subscribers' hands.

I've been a premium subscriber on a family plan for a few years, don't watch it much as it mainly the Mrs and kids who use it.
Google have given me a free Nest Home Mini and free Google stadia premium controller and chromecast ultra with a free 3 month subscription just for being a premium subscriber which was nice!
But it's worth it just to avoid the ads and to be able to download videos for offline viewing when there's no data connection.

Thanks for replies.
The content creator argument, well, if you’re not buying anything you are indeed the product being sold.
I’m actually more interested in using it for music more than anything else the problem I found with Spotify etc... mostly because any and every type of music is available on YT but also because on Spotify you spend ages curating a playlist only for that list to randomly disappear as the songs are taken down from the service. If add free YouTube means that I can enjoy the platform and songs, then that’s perfect.
