Sorry to emulate AlexKp's thread but it got me thinking.
What great films have you seen that I may not have heard of (likely because they are low budget/non mainstream for example).
To give you an idea of what I mean I was recently recommended "Touching the void" which i thought was brilliant.
Thanks

Equilibrium. A lot of people seem to have missed that one. Marvelous film.

Delicatessen and The Big Blue are very good.

They are a bit French gone mad but very entertaining. But don't watch if you like mindless films they are a touch arty I'm afraid

Once were Warriors.

Mentioned it on the underrated movies thread, brilliant New Zealand film from the mid 90's. Stars Temuera Morrison (pre Jango Fett) and directed by Lee Tamahori (pre Die Another Day)

Very powerful film with brilliant acting.

The Limey. Brilliant gangster revenge story in the vein of Get Carter, starring Terrence Stamp, set in LA and directed by Steven Soderbergh. It's superb and the soundtrack especially is really suspenseful.

Gangster Number One. Yes, another gangster film but this one is brilliant. If you've seen Paul Bettany in Wimbledon or some other slush, just watch this - he plays an absolute psycho, and very, very convincingly too.

Quite a nasty film Gangster No.1. Not for the faint hearted!

Sexy Beast is also worth a look.

For me, the ultimate petrolhead film, which I can't seem to find anywhere anymore , and is the inspiration for the current cross continent race, is The Gumball Rally (circa 1975).

Good ole fashioned car fun, with some classic sports cars going hell for leather across the U S of A, sticking two fingers up at the BiB along the way.

Class....pure class

Another good film!

Gangster No. 1 was made by the same team who did A Clockwork Orange back in the '70s, so I suppose it would be a bit nasty. Brilliant themes though.

I think my favourite bit of that film is where it flashes back forward to Malcolm Macdowell as Gangster, where he's trying to explain to the boss's wife, who he'd wanted dead, that all he's ever wanted is to be a loving husband and father, but he just can't escape the violent life he's led. Very emotionally powerful.

Well I thought it was superb. Much better than Snatch - a film that didn't know whether to be slapstickingly funny, or violently serious.

I can't wait to see Batman . A mate of mine saw it and said it was the best film he'd seen in the last few years.

Like what? I thought it was quite good.

Dust Devil is a good low key horror flick.

"Faster Pussycat, Kill!, Kill!" is a seminal work

and "Ratfink a Bobo". Unencumbered by any notion of a script or the other constraints of traditional film-making it transcends the obvious and enters the realms of the truly ridiculous.

Yeah Eraserhead. Do you remember when they're sitting round a table in silence for ages and the cooked chicken starts to move around. Then one of the guys says, "Well, what d'ya know Malcolm?" I think, or was it the drugs? Weird.
