Wheeler Dealers
Discussion
I've been watching the show for a few weeks in the USA. I just saw the Bentley restoration and it seems to me that once you figure out Ed's labor charge (60 hours prepping the body), these cars are not really sold at a profit (of course they get paid for doing the show). Also, I would be curious to see how the cars are looking one or 2 years post restoration. I also saw the Lotus Espirit renovation and it gave me the heebejeebees.
Of course it's not actually profit. But it your hobby was doing up old cars it would mean you've got cash for the next project.
I feel sorry for Ed China having to listen to Mike Brewer's inane shyte. Stikes me as someone who knows a lot about cars but somehow at the same time knows sod all about cars.

They do it as if an enthusiast was doing it themselves in their own garage
Of course it's all a con and everything including the bartering is all set up but it makes it entertaining
I remember having a good laugh at the one were he was balancing the wheels of a motor and pulled out this machine that was about £6-7000 to buy
and said "if you've got one of these"
heres the proof it's all a set up
"just pretend you haven't met Mike before, you've just spoken to him on the phone or something"

Can't watch it anymore. Absolutely HATE Brewer.
I watch every episode on Sky+.I fast forward:
- Brewer's bit at the start where he finds the car for a ridiculously low price either through the trade (Range Rover Mk3) or a "forum" (£1k Boxster)
- Brewer's bit where he buys the car and lops off 20% of the asking price without batting an eyelid, even though it's ridiculously under-priced already, and the buyer miraculously accepts!
- Brewer's bit in the middle where he *always* walks in and does the gag about Ed not having touched the car because it looks the same as when he brought it in, then he wastes a load of money making the car "newer" with a facelift or decides to paint it some random-weird colour
- Brewer's bit at the end where he flogs the car ridiculously cheap because either a) it's a TV show and they can't look too greedy, having bought it for a pittance, or b) it's rancid and he can't get any more money for it.
- All of the bits that Edd does.
As a petrolhead, to enjoy this program I think you pretty much have to ignore the money side of it and just watch Edd do his stuff. I now only ever watch it recorded and fast forward all the fake negotiating, optimistic accounting and all the other Brewer nonsense. There's about 30 minutes of enjoyment to be had from every show.
'Old at yer 'and son!

Oh god, another one of these threads...
Three points:
1 If you don't like it don't watch it.
2 If you save money by maintaining a car yourself when you work out running costs do you factor in your own hourly rate? Half the point of the show is to demonstrate how doing the work yourself can save you money. They always add in labour costs when they get sother people to do work.
3 Poor old Ed, having to put up with Mike?! Given that you don't know Ed isn't totally meaningless to make any assumptions about their relationship?

It's staggering how many people simply don't 'get it'.
The point is, Edd is playing the part of YOU.
You buy a car, do it up yourself, and sell for a profit (or simply increase it's value).
By the way - Edd is not a genius. The stuff he does can easily be done by anyone that way inclined. In fact, some of his work is a bit of a bodge, but then he is in a rush and just trying to turn a profit.
Great show, and Mike is a lot less annoying these days.

You buy a car
So Edd = YouYou buy a car
You buy a car, therefore You = Mike,
therefore
Edd = Mike.

I am a massive fan of the show. As stated before it probably doesn't bear close examination, but that doesn't really matter.
I thought the Morris one was rather disappointing though- could be me, but it was almost like "engine needs fixing, here it is all done. Car needed a respray- here it is all done, here's the car all finished" what about the other bits?! But they can only fit so much in.
