Why when TV programs such as Top Gear and Fifth Gear put together a dog race or a track session on a circuit seem to butcher the lap?

By this they seem to make the lap as disjointed as is humanly possible. The N-Ring is the biggest point in case, they flip from corner to corner some of which are miles apart and completely in the wrong order.

I understand they want to try and show the best footage with the differing camera angles....but this could surely be done in a continuous lap?

Ive just watched a shoot out at Combe, and they were doing it there!

It's so you can't see how criminally slow they are... biggrin

That does annoy me. I think they did it on top gear when at the ring and it annoyed me more as they had the timer counting down and used clips in a random order from the lap as it went.

It's because they have less cameras than angles they show you, once you start shooting the "same" event at different times from different angles, i.e. Can we just shoot that again from the next position?, it's only a short step to editing shots out of sequence. It's a conceit of tv. TG do it all the time, as in truth because everybody does it. And 99.9% don't notice or care, after all it's the essence of larking about on the nurburgring not a whole corner by corner 8-9min lap (most) people are interested in. And needs/budget force it upon them.

Didn't JC (Clarkson, not the son of God) state a while back that some of the footage they use of "him" sliding cars around the test track wasn't him at all, but was one of the production crew larking around in the car after he'd finished filming?

They do it on the road trips as well, not just the tracks.

Part of the magic of television.

But it annoys you more because Clarkson can get round faster than you wink

I disagree, Ive put plenty of video laps together using a variety of well placed cameras on both bike and car. I'm sure that the 99.9% you speak of are the many that haven't sampled the Ring...for the majority of those that have, like Will above, it does make a farce of the time spent. Surely the footage would flow far better?

Are they not one the same?

The road trip from Combe to a random strip club in Oxford was similar to that! It was no wonder the cars never made it they kept doubling back on themselves!

Yes I'd say 99.9% of TG viewers have not sampled the N Ring, first hand in a car.
So ignorance is bliss and doesn't spoil their viewing experience. TG aren't producing content for you my friend. They are going for mass Market giggles and wow factor guys cocking about in cars, it's about the emotion of what they are doing not a track day guide or feel the need for factual accuracy.

Don't let truth get in the way of a good story.

I'd say more like 99.999%

It's sometimes obvious from the change in colour of the driver's shirt on a single 'lap' and the fact you never get a good enough view of the driver to make a positive ID.
