Big, big fan of Band of Brothers. Is The Pacific as good?

No.

If BoB is 9.5/10, Pacific is 6 or 7.

It's not as good, but definitely still worth a watch.

I thought 'pacific' was dire.

Why so bad? Plot, acting, effects? Is it still Hanks & Spielburg?(sp)

It's good, but you just don't seem to build any affinity with the characters. Gets better as it goes on.

Seems to be trying too hard to be 'epic'.

It isn't, but still a good watch.

I had real trouble trying to tell the different characters apart in The Pacific, so it was difficult to emphathise with them, plus I thought it dragged a bit in some parts, trying too hard to be like BoB.

About sums it up for me. I didn't really get the impression they banded together like the guys in BoB, if you excuse the pun.

Plus the guys in BoB were all good, decent types, where as the guy in the Pacific were all by and large mentalists!

I think The Pacific is a good watch in isolation, but having watched BoB a few times it just doesn't compare and is maybe a disappointment. You don't develop an afinity with the characters (as has already been said) and you don't care as much when they die. Strangely I also felt there was too much sex in it, now I'm not a prude but I felt it detracted from the story.

If you watch it in isolation and try not to compare it to BoB you will enjoy it.

Agree with above comments in that it is hard to empathisize with any of the characters (or even remember who they are!)

Action scenes are good though but it tends to drift away from that in certain episodes and you will be left fustrated that it doesn't get back to the 'war'.

It's quite good but nowhere near as BOB
I wondered if it's because we can relate to the Europe and British element in bob rather than yanks in Asia but it is different.

I've watched bob about 4 or 5 times over the years and could easily watch it again. I saw the pacific when it came out then started the repeats recently & only got to part 3 lost interest having seen it before.

Sopranos however, currently watching it for the second time and it's just fantastic. Will do the same with the wire if sky Atlantic show it

It's okay, BoB is so much better. I knew everyones name in BoB and had googled them and I even purchased the book (fantastic btw).

With Pacific, It just wasn't all there. The pacific had a love story, for gods sake.

The problem with the Pacific is that the three main characters it follows are all in different units, so they and the supporting actors around them can be ignored for an episode or two, whereas in BoB they are all in the same unit, and together for much of the screen time.
