Redacted: Brian De Palma. RAPE, Movies, History, Wartime?
Discussion
Now I'm not historically educated nor sufficiently knowlegable enough, to start a thread with an all-conquering statistically dynamite thesis that no one can deny, on how wars in current or past societies, probably did/still all DO include some genuine accounts of the illegal or immoral sacking, plundering, pillaging, looting, marauding, raping and general wartime debauchery that does go on in the world. Im not stupid enough to deny it, either.
So I will venture my vote, and suggest to those who took a stab at De Palma's movie (at being borderline treasonous, to the USA)... and suggest that it would be stupid to state the world simply is not on some level, however small, just like this. For it is. The daily news in any country confirms this, globally. To a small degree perhaps, but confirms it none the less.
If a single city in the USA can contain a murder/homicide or more per day (and there are many cities globally that do) why is what happened in this movie, set in Iraq, so ludicrous? To the point that critics slammed it so hard. Arent the critics and papers in it, to sell more papers and media time/attention? Might the US feds have actually "$paid down" some critics, or is my tin foil hat on skew?
If you haven't seen the film, without a spoiler: Its a good film. Believable, set in a war zone. If you are open minded enough to watch it through, bearing in mind nothing IN the film hasn't happened hundreds or possibly thousands of times in your own country, why was this film hit so hard? The critics love hype, media attention, they love selling papers.
Summary: A few US troops do the unspeakable in Iraq, to Iraqis. These things are made into a movie. And the western world shuns the film as being abominably ludicrous. Even "treasonous" as mentioned above.
Bollócks.
I have no problem believing that the same shít happened in Nam, maybe even daily with the numbers of soldiers out there. Who knows.
So why not now. I see no evidence that society has changed, since Nam.
Watch the film if you have not already, and like war movies.
Im sure rape happens in War times, possibly(?) even more than in every day life when things make even less sense to soldiers, some whom are borderline crazy anyway due to losing mates in explosions as the movie shows, etc. So for every 20'000 troops a country (UK, US) sends over there, why should it be incomprehensible that a rape may have indeed somehow/somewhere occurred?
(PS, Searched PH for redacted, nothing found!)
