I love Westerns, actually I really love spaghetti westerns. Once upon a time in the west is one of my favourite films.

Look how freakin awesome this is.

They made stars out of Clint and Bronson and others, you know, and I understand they fell out of fashion. But that doesn't stop them being great films. I hate for any of them to be remade, can you imagine how terrible magnificent seven with Will Smith and Jason Stathom would be? oh god please don't.

But I like to think one day they'll be making proper Western films again. Will it ever happen?

Yeah, good westerns come along, just not as many as in their heyday. Just look at Unforgiven, although I didn't realise that was 19 years ago. yikes

I'm sure there have been some good ones in the last 19 years.

Exactly, 19 years ago isn't recent. Maybe the Coen brothers are the ones who are closest to keeping the western alive. True Grit and No Country For Old Men.

The first thing I thought of was Once upon a time in the west when I read the thread title.

My answer is no, as they have already peaked with the above mentioned. Everything else pales in insignificance.

I thought True Grit was very good, a re-make of course, No Country for old men was REALLY good, I wouldn't have called it a Western until I read this..

What abotu Cowboys and Aliens? Not seen it yet, but it's meant to be good biggrin

The Good The Bad And The Weird is a great Western, and was made in only 2008.

There have been a few good titles in the last few years, but nowadays a lot of it is genre-mangling - Cowboys & Aliens, Shanghai Noon etc.

Something like Book Of Eli might be the outlet for the Western-feeling vibe now.

Nonetheless, there's still more traditional fare like 3:10 To Yuma and Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford.

ETA: sorry, I took so long writing my post that some of it's redundant already!

Still don't think you can top the clasic Sergio Leone Dollars trilogy for Western action.

That was a remake of a 1957 original.

Great thread, I love a good western. Once upon a time in the West is peerless in my book, the perfect western. There have been the odd few decent westerns in the past few years;

I really enjoyed Open Range.

Seraphim Falls was good; the opening chase sequences were great but it all got a bit biblical towards the end.

Watched Appoloosa recently, it had some great scenes including an awesome shootout, but I found it a tad too slow.

Also how about Deadwood, I know it’s TV but this is probably the best western I’ve seen post Unforgiven, even though it was never properly ended it still has loads to offer.

Last properly good western I've seen (haven't seen the True Grit remake yet) was Unforgiven.

That said, I also enjoyed 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford' a lot.

'Tombstone' from 1993 was a take on Wyatt Earp/Gunfight at the OK Corral, with Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Bill Paxton et al. Always thought it was a good Western; Kilmer is excellent as Doc Holliday, sufficiently laid-back as to be horizontal. "Barber? Proceed...."

One of my favourites is the Long Riders about the James/Younger gang some great action sequences and casting was clever by using brothers for all main leads, James and Stacey Keach, Keith, Robert and David Carradine, Dennis and Randy Quiad and Christopher and Nicholas Guest;

If you get a chance well worth a look.
