No more live TV
Discussion
No more live TV... for me at least.
I have just cancelled my Virgin TV service. 30 days from today my set top box will be collected and I will no longer be able to view live TV.
I have a PS3 which will give me access to iPlayer, STV player and 4OD.
I have been looking at the LoveFilm service through the PS3 too (although I've seen a review that says the service through the PS3 is not great and I'm not overly keen on the fact that the service has been down along with PSN for several weeks).
Youtube and downloads can also help with shows I may miss, and my eyes will be peeled for cheap DVD boxsets of recommended shows.
Has anyone else done away with live TV? Any other tips to still view the best of broadcasting at my leisure?

freeview box with a HDD?
My flat currently has no outside aerial (which would cost £100 to install maybe?). For that reason, and also to avoid having to pay for a TV license (another £145.50pa), I'm going to go along with no live TV at all for a while to see how I get on with it.I hardly ever watch anything at time of broadcast - it's iPlayer or other catch-up services for odd thing that's worth seeing. Big backlog of TV series on DVD to watch as well.
Are you still getting internet via Virgin? On the bundle I'm on it would actually cost slightly more per month to not have TV as I'd lose the "bundle discount" for getting phone, internet and TV from them.

I've done it and love it. Spend so much time doing more productive things, reading, spending time with friends, etc.In fact, I find myself hardly ever watching anything on catchup any more!

Yes. I went through the various options with the very lovely sounding Aussie girl I was speaking with and 10MB Broadband only is £21 - slightly cheaper than having BB + Phone (£23ish) or BB, Phone + Free TV (£27ish). I don't use the phone either so BB only is fine for me.Slinky said:
TVCatchup for live streaming..
Although, quite where that stands against a TV license I'm not sure.. (but I'm sure we've had that debate many a time on here..)
I imagine it would infringe the TV license but seems to work very well, can even be played full screen. The picture quality isn't great, but definitely watchable.Although, quite where that stands against a TV license I'm not sure.. (but I'm sure we've had that debate many a time on here..)
I haven't really watched live TV for around 2 - 3 years now as I don't have a TV just a laptop.
itunes, BBC iplayer, channel 4 ( load of full series on there) and various american channels are pretty good. It allows you to choose what you want to watch instead of being dictated to..
TBH you don't miss out on much and it allows you to do other stuff while still being able to watch the programs you want to watch..
No live TV is the future..

You would still legally need a TV licence to watch TV over the internet, how well they could enforce it is another matter.
Lovefilm via PS3 has been pretty much useless for me, the selection is VAST, but quality of choice is really poor, as is the selction process so if you enjoy scanning through pages and pages of straight to late-night cable films to find the odd 5-6 year old film you might of heard of it's for you. Just don't expect it to play faultlessly because it has a tendancy to freeze and skip. It runs reasonaby well via their site though.

Only if you watch (or record) the programme as it is being broadcast live. If you watch (or record) after it has been broadcast such as an hour later then you do not require a licence.I beg to differ on the need to have a TV licence.
It is irrelevant whether it is live or not is is the capability to view programming or otherwise.
Real world example is this a guy I used to work with back in the day had a dvd player and a Sony Profeel TV (no tuner in it just a monitor) Licence people knock on his door and say he need a licence as he has a TV, no I don't I have a monitor no TV signal.
They think he is lying so they take him to court and they lose because he produces manuals stating that no TV signal could be received, however judge ask him if he had a laptop or computer in the house connected to the internet, he said no, however if he had said yes he would have lost because he would then have had the ability to watch live TV.
Many people are being caught out this way so you need to be careful.

Please don't confuse the thread with your anecdotal rubbish. It is irrelevant whether it is live or not is is the capability to view programming or otherwise.

I imagine he would have had to admit to a laptop and admit to watching live TV through it.Many people are being caught out this way so you need to be careful.

You're wrong. From TV Licensing website:It is irrelevant whether it is live or not is is the capability to view programming or otherwise.

You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder.

I have a licence not my prob.
My case is a real one.
Follow my advice or not makes no odds to me just trying to help a brother out.
