In related news, the Pope wears a pointy hat and bears defecate in wooded areas...

EastEnders does not offer a realistic portrayal of working-class life and is not as multicultural as the real East End of London, its boss has admitted.
Are you as shocked as I?

Surprised anyone watches it, I have never seen anything so depressing in my life, it's like a visual morrissey album.

Not seen it since kaff etc was in it but doubt it is much different now.

I don't watch it, but I assume there's a lack of 12 year olds giving birth / lack of gang crime / lack of fraudulent disability claims ? hehe

Whenever I am subjected to it, it just seems to be people arguing. I dont get the point of why people want to watch that.

Couldn't care less to be honest. The programme is a cornucopia of melodramatic faux emotional twaddle.

That asian family is not very realistic in the slightest. The one before them (the ferraro's or something) were much closer.

Hey, guess what it's not real.

Would folk really want to watch the true version? For a start half wouldn't speak english. A fair percentage would spend their time stoned on various substances etc. As someone said where are all the teen gangsters and 11 year old 'molls'. Only one occasional junky and virtually no crime.

Larndan isn't full of chirpy cockerneys and caring sharing leave your door unlocked communities.

I never thought it was. But just how irritatingly left wing can the BBC get?

What drove him to say it's not realistic because it's "not as multicultural" as the real east end.

This might be true. But the thing that got me was when it had two heterosexual male AIDS victims in the same street. As far as I can tell the chances of that happening are about on a par with a meteorite strike.

Poor portrayal of disgusting peasants with bad attitude and no moral code whatsoever.

Terrible programme. Only saving grace is that most of my PH time occurs when it's on and Mrs.C. banishes me from the living room.

Except for when Glynis Barber was on there..... Not so bad then!

Same here.

That's one of the reasons me and the Mrs are compatible.

I've always liked the way you get affairs, assaults, rapes, abortions, family break ups, fist fights........but no naughty words

The important thing is - do you enjoy it? And if so, why?

I thought that when we moved to Delhi we'd get away from this awful show.

But no, I went and got a UK VPN so i could watch Dr Who/Other good Beeb stuff, and of course then the missus twigged so i now have to download East-f**king-Enders as well.

Oddly a friend and I were discussing last night this matter but not prompted by this news. We were saying that we thought Eastenders was a good representation of British culture and in comparison Neighbours/H&A are a good representation of Australian culture. But we were thinking much more broadly about things like daily activities rather than simply racial breakdown.

All of these shows probably don't represent multiculturalism but by 2001 census 2% of people in the UK were black that means only 1 in 50 characters should be black to be an accurate representation?
