In my ever continuing effort to educate my son, we watched Alien 3 last night after having watched the first two a month or so ago. I was surprised how well it holds up given how much stick it got on release (myself included in the naysayers). I still hate how they 'resolved' the Hicks/ Newt family and the truly daft sexual encounter between Ripley and kindly doctor stereotype no. 1 but in general the gothic vibe worked for me. The CGI is really ropey by todays standards but my son did whoop for joy when the alien went from the floor to running on the ceiling. The prisoners really need more back story but I do have the quadrilogy so I'm going to watch the extended edition some time to see how much better it is.

So, 6 or maybe 7 EV's out of 10 Bishops.

Adam.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before but we watched The Holdovers over the weekend. Absolutely brilliant movie.
Lovely understated film, thought it was excellent

The wife fancied some dystopia last night so having not watched for years, we put on Children of Men.

Still a brilliant, visceral film which sounds incredible in Dolby+ with surround sound - the Bexhill camp scenes had me dodging bullets on the sofa. Great performances from all, Michael Caine is great, and of course "that scene". Loses a point for being perhaps overly long in parts.

8/10
I've not seen this for years and keep meaning to watch it. I see it's on Prime (although I do have it on DVD I can see). Will give it another watch soon. Just one of those films that you kind of have to be in the mood for.
It’s a great film, unsettling and not too far fetched with the decline into chaos.

The Beekeeper

Looked like it had bits filmed in England? OTT action and silly in parts - still fun

Accident Man (Prime). I'd never heard of this until I saw a trailer for the sequel the other day. A recentish film but very reminiscent of the martial arts movies of my youth. Scott Adkins as an assassin who specialises in making kills look like accidents goes after the people who killed his ex-girlfriend. Mostly starring stuntmen who also act, with Michael Jai White, Ray Park (Darth Maul), Amy Johnson (Stunt double for Scarlet Johanson, Jenifer Lopez and many others). The fights are fast and look relatively realistic apart from the main characters' ability to get up again after being kicked in the face. A fun B movie, and I'll be watching the sequel.
See also Debt Collectors(s) and One Shot, Gringo and Seized. Scotty has a pretty impressive run of films, all very similar and varying in quality but some are right 'bangers'.
Not seen any of those, I'll keep an eye out.

I watched the sequel, Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday last night. He has to protect a mafia boss' son from a bunch of other assassins. Again some great fight scenes with several graduates of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team Training Center. It's silly but it knows it is.

Lots of action and it's nice to see everyone is still alive but ultimately felt flat and the humour was a lot less natural than "back then".
Good summary. Better than I expected and decent reprise of bits of the original soundtracks.

Masterminds
Directed by Jared Hess who also did Napoleon Dynamite and featuring Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wig and Owen Wilson. I thought it was brilliant. Its totally bonkers but based on a true story and funnier than I expected from the low IMDB score it has.

2010

Not been back to this for years. Decent cast including Roy Scheider & Helen Mirren. A joint Soviet/USA mission to Jupiter in search of answers to the events surrounding the fate of the crew of The Discovery launches amid rising tensions between the superpowers on Earth.

Made before CGI & it shows. Weirdly less well done effects than the original which speaks to Kubrick's obsessive eye for detail I think but nevertheless that is trumped by a thoughtful story & a script that largely avoids the cold war cliches around at the time of filming, 1984. Also enjoyable that the film assumes the Soviet Union is still about in 2010 but that's forgiveable.

In fairness, even in 1984 the Soviets were still a major player in space. In fact, I remember reading Sci-Fi books around then that even speculated that the USSR would dominate space to the exclusion of the USA. They certainly were major contenders in the space race and had traditionally beaten the Americans in everything apart from getting a man on the moon first after which they began their decline.

But, yes, I remember this being a good film. Haven't seen it in ages though.

Not for here but in light of the last couple of posts, probably some enjoyable mileage in a thread talking over how good or bad Hollywood is at predicting the future. Big shiny spaceships are one thing, no mobile phones, clunky computers & big hair another.

Couldn't agree more, however, both Gattaca and Equilibrium flopped at the box office massively. It's only in later years they've been (rightly IMO) recognised for how good they are. It's also why they're still so watchable today because very little has aged in terms of the effects. I recently picked up Gattaca on 4k and it's stunning.

Super Troopers

Someone mentioned this film in the same breath as Airplane, so obviously I had to give it a watch as Airplane is one of my favourite comedies of all time.

Unfortunately, this wasn't for me. The comedy style just didn't land for me, it seemed stuck between Road Trip and the aforementioned Airplane but not really landing in either fully. At times the comedy was quite adult but then others incredibly childish.

It managed a few chuckles out of me but that was about it. I reckon if you watch the first ten minutes and find it funny, you'll love the rest but if like me you just find it odd, you'll probably not get much out of the rest. Glad I watched it though.

went to look for Accident Man - sadly it's a 'pay for' so it'll have to wait some (considerable!) time

Enjoyed it, but Murphy seems much less sharp and there are so many throw-back references. Also I guess it’s for the plot but Judge Reinhold looks rough…

He really does, and so does Bronson Pinchot. Oddly, despite his greater age, John Ashton looks quite well for it.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes

Given that the original film with Charlton Heston had one of the very best twisty endings ever, I do find this recent series predictable. Great sfx but not a terribly great story.
