Given the date I watched Independence Day Resurgence

What a waste of time. I mean I expected it to be a bit cheesy, but it was ste. Constant reference to 1986, piss poor acting, utterly predictable. Avoid.

0/10.
Yep. I had the displeasure of this a couple of months back and posted a similar review to yours.

Utter ste.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Lots of action and it's nice to see everyone is still alive but ultimately felt flat and the humour was a lot less natural than "back then".

It was kind of interesting as a glimpse into a corporate/ AI/ Chinese-appeasing media future.

Race for Glory Audi vs. Lancia, don’t bother. Poor directing, woeful acting, dire cinematography and sound, it does not have one redeeming feature. 1hr 49 mins

The Grand Tour, Jeremy Clarkson, great directing, outstanding sound and cinematography; no acting, just real enthusiasm, 18 minutes, of perfect motor sport story telling.

Went into this expecting crap but was pleasantly surprised. Don’t get me wrong, it’s no classic but as a tribute to the originals (I & II) it wasn’t so bad and great to see the original cast reunited albeit looking a bit older… (well it has been 40 years!)

After talking about The Mummy Returns...

The Mummy

I saw this was showing in my local cinema for it's anniversary, timing fitted in with the football so away we went!

I've seen this several times before but don't think I ever saw it in the cinema, my GF however had never seen it. I had low expectations for her enjoying it as she's not a fan of Indy or anything like that, however she loved it. She said afterwards she feels like she's maybe missed out on a lot of 90s films because she's misjudged them. So there's a project for weeks to come smile

Anyway, the film holds up incredibly well. It's such a fun romp from start to finish, despite being large in scale and scope the cast is pretty tight and everyone is on point. I think I marginally prefer Rachel Wesiz's character in Returns as she's slightly more capable but she's great anyway.

The effects on the whole are still ok but I remember at the time how groundbreaking they were and they do make this feel like a more modern Indy film. There was so much buzz around this on release it was a joy to see it on the big screen.

One thing that always gets me is the practical effects of the aircraft sinking into the sand. Or, rather, it's fuselage does and its wings stay exactly where there are. Always irritates me whenever I see the film.

But, yes, I completely agree with your post. yes

just watching The Mummy (1999) - what a fantastic film, even after 25 years. Yes some of the SFX are showing their age but the casting is top-notch, the story fun and it moves along at a good clip - very similar I guess to Indiana Jones 1 & 3 (even though I like IJ2 I'll admit it's not as good as the other 2).

3.5 canopic jars out of the 4 needed
just finished The Mummy Returns (2001) and it really isn't anywhere near as good as its forebear - probably not helped by having a precious little kid front and centre and some dreadful (even for the time) SFX when it came to the Scorpion King. That said it's still enjoyable and Imhotep's final moments are (IMO) quite touching 2.5 canopic jars out of the 4 needed

Away for a little break so won't be watching no.3 until, probably, next week (I recall that's it's the weakest of the 3)
well my Mummy marathon came to an end today as I watched the 3rd Mummy film - and, surprisingly, found it a lot more enjoyable than I recall it being. It's certainly not as good as the 1st but I feel it's at least as good as 2

I went to my local cinema yesterday to see The Bikeriders. I thought it was very good. Bit violent in places but well acted especially by Jodie Comer. Her accents are so convincing. Definitely well worth seeing.
I went to see this on Friday, thoroughly enjoyed it

Well I didn't even notice that but now I won't be able to unsee it next time rofl

Reminds me of that meme that says something "Movies made me think quicksand would be a bigger problem in my life than it actually is". Seems to have fallen out of fashion in films in more recent times.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!

Haven't seen this in forever but stuck it on yesterday (it's on D+). Hits all the usual 80s beats, I remember for so long the effects in this film were mindblowing to a small me growing up. There was a time in cinema when we were fascinated with the micro world, this and Inner Space were two of my favourite films growing up.

Much of the practical work still looks good, the stop-motion work is very good but obviously out of place now (reminds me of how we almost had stop-motion in Jurrasic Park). It's a tight 90 so whistles along and is fun for all ages. Another James Horner score as well which really carries the film along.

A couple of older observations. I'd forgotten Buffys Mum is in it (also playing a Mum, the woman seemingly doesn't age) and I couldn't help think how the look of the kids by the end reminded me so much of Tim and Lex by the end of Jurrasic Park. Just something about it and how dishevelled they looked, it's rare you see kids get beat up on a journey but makes the whole thing seem more realistic.

Ok, I appear to have misremembered and the wings had been ripped off. Which in itself is implausible given how the fuselage has ended up. But we can maybe let that go.

Mr. Lockjaw

a struggling children's entertainer who is dragged into the underworld of criminal interrogation and torture by his deranged dummy, Mr. Lockjaw

on amazon, it isn't like the usually films, and most will hate it, but I loved it, a great funny film.

Aftersun - currently on iPlayer and netflix.

An absolute masterpiece, I've not seen anything more powerful. I was a blubbering wreck when it finished and even had a little cry the next morning. I hate myself for pulling the parent card, but as a parent the way the love between the father and daughter is portrayed is devastating in light of the plot.

Just watched this after reading the above review. Jeeez what was that all about? I get the premise but basically, it was a film about a girl going on holiday to Turkey (Olu Deniz to be precise which is where I took my daughter for a similar holiday a few years ago)with her depressed dad and….NOTHING HAPPENS! Ok, it has an emotive ending but hardly a ‘masterpiece’.

I haven’t watched it this week but it’s the best film I’ve seen all year.
