Er, the bike shouldn't have been overtaking a car that was turning right.

Watch another couple of the rider's videos. He's an organ donor in waiting.

Crikey, reminds me so much of the very, very early years of the Festival of Speed...
Which was an event I loved for a long time, and now despite living a five minute bike ride from, just can't be arsed to go to anymore.
The VIP experience I’m sure is lovely, but having been to the FOS a few times now as a pleb, I’m done. It’s ridiculously busy and expensive.
It is busy but I don't get the expensive bit. I'm going down on Thursday, cost me £30. I'll have a look at the wonderful cars in the Style et Lux, wander around the various paddocks, spend some time in the Bonhams auction marquee and watch some stuff going up the hill. Cup of coffee, a burger and a beer perhaps another £20 so I don't consider that expensive. Of course you can go full champagne Charlie and blow hundreds sitting in Kinrara all day quaffing Moet but that's not for me...
Ah, the early years of FOS. I missed 94 and 95, but thanks to Steve Cropley writing about it in Autocar in the spring of 96, went that year and it was my car heaven for a few years. Arrived early in 96 admittedly, but have a few old photos and it looks fairly deserted! My wife and I attended each year from 1996 to 2008 and took both our daughters when they were babies. You could wander round the grounds and paddocks bumping into various celebs who would give you an autograph without any worries. Have only been once now in the past 12 years, that was 2018 and for me it was just to big and commercial.

The car show I want to try now is the Festival of the unexceptional, but I understand even that has grown so much in a few years as word has got round, that it is moving away a little from its starting USP.

The Goodwood Revival is wonderful too isn't it. Have only been once, in 2003 and really need to go again!!

Was the car indicating ? Did he check his mirrors before turning ?

No sadly. Police decided to take no action against anyone.

at the end of the video you can see the chap who starts to run towards the biker stop dead in horror.
I hope you have recovered as much as is possible.

The witnesses all said they thought I was dead: I wasn't breathing and they could see blood coming out of my ears, but I then began moving and started spluttering.

My Apple Watch shows my heart being stopped for a while...

From the top:
- jaw broken in 3 places
- fractured larynx
- 4 broken vertebrae
- 2 fingers de-gloved, reconstructed, one amputated after a week (gangrene after the leeches weren't applied correctly...) and the second amputated after a year because it wasn't mending straight
- pelvis fractured in two places requiring a stainless band, bolting and plating (the band was removed a year later because it was too painful to keep in, but the rest is still in)
- nerve damage in one leg

thegreenhell said:

It wasn't until I got to it. I was braking and steering to the right in the vain hope he'd finally check if anything was coming and I'd go around him. If I hadn't braked, I'd have probably Supermaned over the car and not been as badly injured.

Yes, obviously. That's why I was a trackday instructor and have only had this crash in 46 years of driving/riding. My satnav shows I wasn't speeding at any time before the crash.

No. No. If he had looked at any time, it wouldn't have happened.

Mike Hawthorn was an F1 champion and professional racing driver. He did well.

Enlighten us with your experience. Why were you overtaking cars at a considerable speed differential (the legal limit is irrelevant) approaching and opposite an obvious hazard?

That was a horrible crash mate. Hope you get over your injuries as best you can.

Not wanting to join the confrontational 'all his fault' comments I just wanted to share something I picked up recently on a Bikesafe day from the policeman observing me. He picked me up on overtaking two cars when there was a lay-by on the offside. I explained that the lay-by was empty and the cars I were overtaking were not indicating. He pointed out that other drivers do some mad sh!t like not checking mirrors, not indicating and not looking for bikes when turning right. The example he gave was kids in the car suddenly needing the toilet or feeling sick.

As I say, I’m not piling on. If we’re honest all bikers have done the same at some time and luckily usually get away with it. But the policeman’s comments have, and your video will, make me more circumspect when going for an overtake.

I did my direct access about 25 years ago the lessons live with me to this day - one of which is never overtake near a junction. Today, even in a car, I always drive defensively. If someone can pull out/pull in etc. they will. We can't eliminate risk but there's low hanging fruit.

My ex-wife's uncle was killed on a bike... overtaking a car at a junction. Idiot. It didn't need to happen. Being alive is better than being right.

Sorry to whoever here was injured, and all the best.

The important thing is that despite injuries everyone is still here. Over taking next to a car park doesn't seem logical. We've probably all made silly judgements when younger and got away with it but learned we were being very silly.

To be fair that'll just be bravado. It's far too obvious what all the errors were and why charges weren't pressed against the biker.

Whether indicating or not the attitude of the car with it slowing and even crossing the line it was clear where it was going. The car park on the right also makes it an absolute no go for passing anything at that point. Turning with the guaranteed direction of travel of the car was a huge learner error and with more experience or skill you don't mentally lock up like that and flow into the inevitable but mentally adjust and re aim for where the gap is opening not closing. That's something we are all guilty of as learners and for many years after unless we give ourselves plenty of track experience etc.

Unfortunately, it was just a poor decision made several hundred yards before the car decided to not use its mirrors while turning right (such is the exuberance of youth). A desperately poor decision to ever assume a car driver ever checks their door mirrors in such circumstance (again the inexperience of youth). And the brain freeze that causes people to just keep turning and flowing into the accident is something in all of us that takes years of track practice really to reprogram.

But what is important and all that matters is that the young and inexperienced biker, probably over excited at their first FOS event and doing what young adults tend to do when they go to a fast vehicle event in a fast vehicle, survived and now hopefully has many decades of biking ahead of them.

easy tiger, this chap is an instructor.

Not sure if my bike was in that position and it ended in that crash, that it would be something I would be sharing

back to the vid, anyone else think that they will struggle to sell more than one of those Alpine long tail thingys?

That Berger spec Ferrari, stunning

That Alpine was a bit odd. I assume some of the gubbins round the back in some shots was some kind of storage frame ?
Agreed about the Ferrari. Good to see it gets used too.

According to Harry, so far they have sold 10 of 19.
I don't really like the car that much, but there are probably enough wealthy Zagato collectors.

I think that was the additional bodywork that bolted on to make it the ‘long tail’
