They were clever at the time, but I suppose the jokes have been done a million times since then and lost their humour.

When released, the Steve Martin ones were considered a poor substitute for the Peter Sellers films and were roundly panned by critics, so that's rather surprising. But perhaps they have aged better, who knows.

it is weird but I found the whole schtick of Insp. Clouseau being a cuckold quite distasteful which likely detracted from the film - that said the humour was, obviously, dated too (I seem to recall thinking it was the weakest of all the films even way back)
