Quite enjoyed this episode despite not being a big fan of minis.
Thought that Elvis could have involved the apprentice’s more than being hoist button pushers and tooth counters on the final drive. How much experience would they have got from rebuilding the engine under instruction from Elvis, he is an ex F1 mechanic don’t yer know? Appeared to troubleshoot engine and dismantle it on his own. If I had been an apprentice I would have worked unpaid to gain useful experience, how good would that look on your CV?
Still interesting never the less, paint job cost £2k? So the school charged them going rate for respray I think, presumably all done by apprentice’s under supervision, great training for them
Less spannering as usual and visiting paddy hopkirks home was OK, another free holiday to Monaco for Mike and Elvis. What a job, working on cars in exotic locations with all expenses paid by film company, wish it were me

I would have thought there is much competition to get a position as a mechanic in F1, decent salary interesting work, travelling the world.
Probably quite a small world where word of mouth about a mechanic counts for a lot. Can’t see them advertising on gumtree for a mechanic, most likely recommended by existing mechanics plus they need to know that a new guy will work as a team with them.
Hence my comment on people on here being hard on him, from the programmes he seems to have expertise on building engines etc rather than bodywork although I would guess you have to be a good all round mechanic to be employed on F1

Just one episode from America; that is a bit of a disappointment, I was looking forward to more, I’m partial to a bit of Americana.
Although Mike has worked in America before, probably difficulties with work/filming/business visas, America seems fairly strict on that stuff.
That could be the reason for the colab with Taverish, who has previous experience, working with UK vloggers.
Big fan of Mini’s, Elvis, “The rev counter needs to be centre stage.” Only if you’re a contortionist, judging by the positioning.
The final selling price £12,500 seemed very fair, considering what Mini’s sell for.
I’ve said it before, but I have really enjoyed the series.

Watched the mini episode last night, they did mention it was stage 3 at the start.
I'm not into minis at all never have been, I was at the British motor museum a few weeks ago taking my 2 year old around to have a look and noticed this.

my initials are AJB, my grandads are EJB and my songs EJPB so these two stood out to me, I wasn't really aware of the importance or story until I watched this episode, did enjoy the episode.

Have a read of the Mechanics tale by Steve Matchett. Quite an old book now (it's from around the time of MSC at Benetton) but provides a good insight from the mechanics pov. Probably different to how they recruit today but actually might be more relevant to when Elvis started out.Probably quite a small world where word of mouth about a mechanic counts for a lot. Agreed on WD though, I don't understand what it's for now when numerous channels on YouTube do it far better. You can have as in depth as you want or not without all the tv b

Interesting thing happened on this week's New to Quest episode ,the Alfa Romeo GTV6 year 2000 car Mike bought .
Once he started delving into things ,he claimed to be a massive Alfa Romeo fan and then admitted to not knowing of the existence of the GTV Cup version and neither did Elvis either .
I thought he knew everything about every car ever ever .
They did do a good job of it , the MOT history is completely clean for the 2 MOTs since it was parked by the original owner in 2020 .
The BS on the Italy roadtrip was silly , the "famous" Varano circuit , most here will never have heard of it , it's not exactly Monza .
I've been there ,it's also round the corner from Dallara's factory .

He is still promoting the tablets to improve engine cleanliness.
Made to improve the poor quality petrol that was available during WW2.for spitfires, poor quality meant the performance was down on the Merlin engine
Hardly think it is needed now with much improved refining techniques in the oil and gas industries.

The episode last night I watched with the 405 Mi16 was all slightly confusing to me. I get they want to make entertaining content but in true WD tradition they make some odd decisions then try to justify the reasons behind it with some bizarre Mike Brewer logic.
Rather than going through the rigmarole of getting a Portuguese MOT just to take a test drive up a mountain road and the consequence of flying out Elvis with a couple of tools in a small bag to do the mechanical work, they would have been better off to just trailer it back like they have been doing for the last 20 plus years of WD.
The 250 euro a day villa with workshop/ garage/ car port /was never used as he did everything outside in the driveway on a tarpaulin. The pool and the rest of the huge villa was more for the benefit of Mike and the production team for a jolly up rather than the two of them to fix a car.
Then the story about selling it after in the online auction whilst the car was still abroad just didn't make sense. Who would blow £20k a 25 year old car without even seeing it and did they actually drive it all the way back to the UK? I would bet they trailered it anyway.
Still it's made for TV so that's OK.
One thing I didn't realise was how many 405 Mi16's are left these days in the UK. I have to put my hand up and confess that one of them did give up it's engine to go into my 205 a few years ago.

At least the production team had the good taste not to expose viewers to the horror of Brewer frolicking in the pool like a de-tusked walrus in his budgie smugglers. Here it is for sale again .

Edit: I watched it last night but apparently it was first broadcast in December 2023
