I know it's full of historical inaccuracies, but I can't help but like Elizabeth, I think the performances - even Eric Cantona - are superb.

Anyone heard of Shine.

The one with the pianist who has a nervous breakdown, then later on in the film walks into a restaurant and the owner rips into him by saying something along the lines of "sock it to me libarichi" (def sp)

Mediterraneo - mid 80s Italian... lovely flick.

Brazil, by Terry Gilliam.

Diva, another mid-80s effort, brilliant French stuff.

Il Postino, as mentioned several times. Well worth it.

Trivia: The lead actor basically gave his life to make sure the film was completed on time - he didn't go for essential medical attention and died something like 2 weeks after the film finished shooting.

"Russian Ark" - a one-take dreamworld experience set inside St Petersburg's Hermitage Palace.

Try it if you're stressed and need to feel soothed. It's magical.

Well if you haven’t seen it (and I seem to be the only person who actually has) see “The Motorcycle Diaries”.

Also suggest “Fear of loathing in Las Vegas” and “Snakeskin” (The latter being a New Zealand film about a road trip that is a bit of a Marmite film – love it or hate it, I loved it).

Not sure if it's lesser known, but "A time to die"

Certainly one of Samuel L's lesser known films, but very very watchable indeed. The last line in the court room scene is pure genius

delicatessen is good, but my favourite film is Big Wednesday - not lesser known to some, but still hardly mainstream - a film about friendship with some awesome surfing - but it is not (as some would say) a film about surfing

Managed first half hour or so while very drunk and very tired. Never did back round to trying again in a better state.

Sorry - absolutely hated it. Thought it showed everything that typified lazy British gangster films, wishing they were Lock Stock or Get Carter.

Amnesia.

British film starring John Hannah as a detective tracking who he believes to be a serial killer whilst contending with the disappearence and presumed death of his wife. Then a man appears in the local psychiatric ward with total amnesia, and the detective becomes convinced he's got his man. However, meanwhile, the investigation into his wife's disappearence suggests the evidence points to him.

Then he realises he's also suffering from amnesia.

It's a rare thriller that can keep you watching, utterly captivated, for three hours, without any sex, violence, bad language etc at all, or even particularly outstanding cinematography. You've got a detective 'hero' who may be a wife-beating murderer, you've got a 'villain' who just appears to be greatly misunderstood and mentally ill, you've got two love interests, one of whom may be dead, the other who may become a murder victim, or is it just your paranoia...

Brilliant film. I've only ever seen it once when I rented it from Blockbuster. It's a great night in.

Also, The Statement, starring Michael Caine, and My Kingdom, a chilling update of King Lear set in Liverpool and starring Richard Harris as an elder of the organised crime scene.
