t ! Last time I checked this was a fantasy story/show.............not set on this earth. By virtue of that you have magic & Dragons, and everything else that goes with it.
If you dive into the GoT Wiki you'll also find in the far easterly reaches of Essos a race of winged human like creatures !
Also if you cast your memories back to seasons 2 & 3 you had the Warlocks of Qarth using to magic and illusions to take Daenerys' three infant Dragons.
So just go with it. It's fantasy !

Quite. Suggest we move on with the reminder that Hummingbirds shouldn’t be able to fly (by normal convention) but their wings work in such a special way, they’re amazing fliers and can even fly backwards!![](/inc/images/censored.gif)

Any good fiction has rules that must be obeyed.![](/inc/images/censored.gif)

One of those in fantasy is that rules around magic can be fantastic, but must be consistent.
If they aren't followed, it pulls people out of the universe. See what happened at the end of GoT, for example.
The non-belief in magic and magical flying in HoD is inconsistent.

I don't see inconsistency. One of those in fantasy is that rules around magic can be fantastic, but must be consistent.

There's generally 'natural magic' (for want of a better term) - things which are intrinsically magical, even if they appear not to be.
Dragons would fall into that category, as would White Walkers. That they flap their wings, meaning people believe they fly the same as birds, does not mean they actually do.
Then there's 'performed magic' - iirc, within GoT this was 'new', but actually was a resurgence of something that had died out thousands of years prior. During the time of Bran the Builder, it wasn't unknown. After all, the dude raised a thousand mile wall of ice a quarter of a mile tall and stupidly thick!
However, by the time of HoD it was essentially extinct and had passed into myth. IINM, it was the shift from 'wiccan' belief (CotF, etc.) to the 'Seven' as organised religion that lead to this decline. People just didn't consider how the Wall came to be.
People like the Red Priestesses were essentially performing artists and ridiculed during HoD, and in GoT the ability to perform magic gradually came back more and more - to the surprise of those who practiced it (having spent generations 'going through the motions' they'd had passed down, then suddenly those 'motions' actually working!).
A man who should know ![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)
“Uncle George discusses the Valyrians with their blood and fire magic, and their revelation that intention has value, as well as the ritual itself. He then goes on to talk about dragons and the magical nature of their fire too.

I didn’t mean to start a bun fight by stating the dragons take me out of it. I’m all in for fantasy, but this, and GOT, work well as shows filled with violence, scheming, sex and politics. The fantasy is in the back ground most of the time, save where dragons are concerned.
Personally, the show could work as well if not better without that element. That said, it’s all in the source material - I just wish the FX work was better.
Some of the recent VFX in recent Marvel movies has been distinctly sub par as well.
It’s an industry problem and the results are documented. Too much demand falling on too few people who are up against impossible timelines.
Makes me realise how amazing the VFX in movies like the original Matrix or the much underrated Starship Troopers was well over 20 years ago.

I'm with you. It's just implausible how they get airborne at all. Wings are nowhere near big enough.
what we need is some sort of conveyor belt......It's the lumbering run up that looks completely out of place.

Have you never seen a non-GoT depiction of a dragon, or large flying dinosaur? Never seen a swan, goose, or other large bird take flight?
If not, it's understandable that you have no comparable image available. If you have, then you need to exercise your brain a little more.

You're telling me I've got an imagination problem, when you're the one struggling to imagine how the take-off logic of a dragon works? I imagine they take off just fine because they're imaginary. Imagine that.
