House of the Dragon - SPOILERS inside.
Discussion
I was late to GoT, probably picked it up about halfway through it's original run and binge watched the first 3 or 4 seasons. In some ways I was wondering if that would be a better way to view this. After the way they finished GoT I've struggled to get any enthusiasm for HotD, to the point I'd almost forgotten it was on.
But saying that, I thought the first episode was ok, enough to grab my interest. Season 1 of GoT was a slow burn, I wonder if this will be too, building up to a season finale. Just hope they aren't afraid to kill off some big characters along the way. I don't think that helped the later seasons of GoT, early on they could shock the audience by killing someone off, we'd got to know them but not well enough for them to be integral to the story. But as the series went on, too many end up wearing plot armour so there is less genuine peril.

With GoT they mostly ran out of source material for the main storyline around the end of Season 5 (some parts of S6 still had plot elements from the books) so started writing the show as a regular Fantasy TV series (based on the future story outline given to them by the author) somewhere in S6 rather than an adaptation of a heavyweight book series as it had been prior. But saying that, I thought the first episode was ok, enough to grab my interest. I think the difference in quality and 'feel' is pretty obvious in retrospect. They still had some standout episodes but the show became more orthodox and fan-serving instead of being something special and challenging.

Whoever said there was no Nudity or Violence was very wrong as well......
Lots of violence!! Random teaching the populous a lesson to behave by cutting of limbs and sticking pokers in places and plenty of nudity, including pimping your daughter out for the King
Thought the dude had his knob chopped off? Why did the gold cloaks do it or just because they could?Lots of violence!! Random teaching the populous a lesson to behave by cutting of limbs and sticking pokers in places and plenty of nudity, including pimping your daughter out for the King
I guess my one issue with this series is, if you remember the Targ history, you know who survives/dies and when, wheres as if you hadnt read the books, GoT kept it fresh by killing off fan favourites. Youd never have thought ned would be beheaded etc. which is one of the downfalls of modern tv series as the 'heros' cant die.

I thought it was great. Set the scene nicely, not too much exposition, but you get what's at stake for the show. The childbirth scene made me squirm.

They were shouting out the crimes as they carried out the punishments, 'Rapist' as they cut his bits off, 'murder' as they beheaded, 'theif' as they cut the hands off. It made sense what they were doing.

I heard that but thought they was just making excuses for dishing it out. I guess they could be from the prison etc. but thought it was just them being s for the sake of it.I thought it was great. Enjoyable, but Matt Smith is letting it down.
Can only hope this time round GRRM stays involved and the show runners don't end up thinking they're more important than the show and it's all really inconvenient actually having to be on set in a suitable medieval location instead of LA...

Apparently HotD needed a trigger warning...

Enjoyed the second half a lot more than the first. Hopefully a little bit less Matt Smith now he’s been sent away. I assume we were meant to despise him, but he really was a massive tt wasn’t he. Badly casted. Anyway, looking forward to more.
I think that's what GoT did so incredibly well. Their antagonists were impeccably well acted, written and cast. You despised Joffrey and Iwan Rheon was nothing short of amazing with his portrayal of Ramsay Bolton. The lad who played Joffrey quit acting over death threats in real life (or something along those lines - though that speaks volumes about modern society rather than his acting prowess potentially)For me, Matt Smith just isn't that guy. I hope I'm wrong.
