Doctor Sleep
A film with a hell of a lot to live up to.
And it didn't. Far too long and far too flimsy.
IMDB gives this a 7.4. My 'will not watch unless it scores...' is 6.2.
For me, it was a 5.9 - most of the enjoyment, quite frankly, coming from the wonderfully fragrant Rebecca Ferguson.
Being a big 'The Shining' fan, I did enjoy the re-visit to the Overlook Hotel. The sets were near perfect and in addition there were several scenes from the original movie. A film with a hell of a lot to live up to.

Currently watching Went The Day Well (1942) again.

It's on again on the week on TPTV.
If you've never seen it I can't recommend it strongly enough if you like a war movie. Think an older, better The Eagle Has Landed.
.....
Agreed. Another outstanding film of the period, documented by a short BFI book. Because it might cause worry, Churchill was minded to censor it's release. The start with an introduction by the church warden is particularly intriguing to draw you in.https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035429/?ref_=ttfc_fc...

The location of Turville is also used by the Vicar of Dibley, and is on my list of 'must visit' one day.
A few YouTube links to follow up with informative critiques discovered since writing this.
Edit : It's on again on the week on TPTV.. Wed 9th Sept at 2.30pm'

A few from the last few days:
Sputnik
Russian-language sci fi drama, one of the Sputnik missions returns from Mir with more than they bargained for. Decent enough horror/mystery.
8/10
Birds of Prey... yadda yadda Harley Quinn
Unfathomably dull, a bored-looking Ewan McGregor as the baddy who doesn't even have a particularly satisfying demise.
A generous 3/10
Rosamunde Pilcher: One Doctor and Three Women (Ein Doktor & drei Frauen)
This was a "let her watch what she wants" TV film on German ZDF TV. The increasingly whimsical and seemingly unending series of love letters to "Cornwall" which appears to be entirely populated by Germans either awkwardly kissing, coyly jumping in and out of each other's bed, having minor family dramas or arguing over a five pound note. Pretty scenery but even as wallpaper it's dull, however it meant that I could read Autosport.com and PistonHeads in peace...
No score given as I wasn't really concentrating, they're all the same anyway.

It's not that it's exactly bad, it's just a bit hollow and pointless.Unfathomably dull, a bored-looking Ewan McGregor as the baddy who doesn't even have a particularly satisfying demise.

The animated TV Harley Quinn show took the same exact starting point and did something much better with it. Ruder/funnier/more extreme too.
John Wick from a recording back in May. Not bad, but it just seems to be him walking around shooting people most of the time. Not great in the "revenge" genre - no long investigation to find out who'd attacked him, no surprises, just shooting. And he never gets his car back. And I thought from the blurb on the EPG that he was avenging his wife's death, but that doesn't seem to have been the case.

There are two more which are much the same. It's random violence for the X-Box generation, loosely strung together by a thin story. Don't give up on the spoiler.Rewatched the Bourne trilogy a few weeks back and finished off with Bourne last night. Didn’t really enjoy it when it came out as it seemed to be a re-tread of Ultimatum but actually enjoyed it last night, despite the preposterous car chase at the end.
Also watch the original Swedish version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last night; gonna watch Hornets Nest and Playing with Fire tonight/tomorrow.

On a day off watching Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (1969).
Made by Gerry Anderson (Thunderbirds) but live action, starring some of my favourite underappreciated actors of the period (Roy Thinnes, Patrick Wymark, Ian Hendry), also Roy Thinnes' actual wife Lynn Loring, who is a 60s fox.
Premise is astronauts travel to mysterious planet diametrically opposite earth behind the sun, crash land and it appears to be a mirror image Earth.
Hasn't finished yet so I can't rate it yet. I forgot how good Gerry Anderson's models are.

Good film, downbeat ending.
Haven't seen it in years but, yes, I remember it being fairly downbeat. ![yes](/inc/images/yes.gif)
One thing that jarred about the film, though, is that the mirror world was so mirrored that even electricity flowed the wrong way, and so fried the protagonist's electronics when they connected a battery up to his ship for him. But... at what point during the journey from our Earth to theirs do the laws of physics reverse?
Or have I misremembered? It was a *very* long time ago that I last saw this film.
