Aftersun - currently on iPlayer and netflix.
An absolute masterpiece, I've not seen anything more powerful. I was a blubbering wreck when it finished and even had a little cry the next morning. I hate myself for pulling the parent card, but as a parent the way the love between the father and daughter is portrayed is devastating in light of the plot.
10/10
Just watched this after reading the above review. Jeeez what was that all about? I get the premise but basically, it was a film about a girl going on holiday to Turkey (Olu Deniz to be precise which is where I took my daughter for a similar holiday a few years ago)with her depressed dad and….NOTHING HAPPENS! Ok, it has an emotive ending but hardly a ‘masterpiece’.An absolute masterpiece, I've not seen anything more powerful. I'm sure it's been mentioned before but we watched The Holdovers over the weekend. Absolutely brilliant movie.
‘Absolutely Brilliant’ blimey, you need to watch Scent of A Woman and Good Will Hunting. They are FAR better films.unrepentant said:

I'd never heard of this until I saw a trailer for the sequel the other day. A recentish film but very reminiscent of the martial arts movies of my youth. Scott Adkins as an assassin who specialises in making kills look like accidents goes after the people who killed his ex-girlfriend. Mostly starring stuntmen who also act, with Michael Jai White, Ray Park (Darth Maul), Amy Johnson (Stunt double for Scarlet Johanson, Jenifer Lopez and many others). The fights are fast and look relatively realistic apart from the main characters' ability to get up again after being kicked in the face. A fun B movie, and I'll be watching the sequel.
I had a "Film Day" on Sunday, not something i normally get the chance to do...... Really enjoyed it!
Ice Road..... Typical silly stuff but i actually enjoyed it 6.5/10
Percy Jackson & the Olympians The Lightning Thief: Just didn't suck me in, it seemed confused between being a comedy and harry potterish experience. I assume its linked to a series or books? Maybe i needed more background? Either way I hadn't heard of it before so gave it a try. Just felt quite weak. 4/10
Percy Jackson & the Olympians The Sea Of Monsters: Same as above unfortunately, 4/10
Triangle Of Sadness: I've had this in my watch list for ages so though i would give it a go, I was bored at times and also never quite "got it" however it was odd and different enough to not feel like i wasted two hours of my life 5/10
Where the Crawdads Sing: Wow, watched this as it kept popping up in Netflix, didn't expect much. It was different to what i expected. Deep and moving , it moves slow but in a really nice way that really sucked me in. Loved it! 9/10
Inside Out: Had never seen it and the Mrs wants to watch the next one. Great film! Thought i would be watching a mindless animation to switch off for the night, quite the opposite! 8/10

The wife fancied some dystopia last night so having not watched for years, we put on Children of Men.
Still a brilliant, visceral film which sounds incredible in Dolby+ with surround sound - the Bexhill camp scenes had me dodging bullets on the sofa. Great performances from all, Michael Caine is great, and of course "that scene". Loses a point for being perhaps overly long in parts.
8/10

PJ is a Y/A series of Greek mythology based modern-day fantasy, by all accounts the author hated the film adaptations. If you're interested there is a D+ series which said author was apparently heavily involved in and is, IMO, worth a watchIce Road..... Typical silly stuff but i actually enjoyed it 6.5/10

I've not seen this for years and keep meaning to watch it. I see it's on Prime (although I do have it on DVD I can see). Will give it another watch soon. Just one of those films that you kind of have to be in the mood for. I've started watching it a couple of times over the years but have never seen it through. Never quite seemed to be in the mood, as you say. unrepentant said:
Silly me. I thought this was the Films I watched this week thread. Not the Films some opinionated random on the internet thinks aren't as good as some films he watched are thread. My bad.
Sorry did I upset your feelings because you watched film, thought it was great then didn’t like what the nasty man said? You need to get into more….or watch more movies before telling people how good the average film was. The Holdovers isn’t a bad film per se just not a patch in the others I mentioned. Just letting other people on here know before they rush to watch it based on your limited knowledge of movies. Lordbenny said:

All in your humble opinion of course, others may differ.Lordbenny said:

This kind of unpleasant attitude belongs in NP&E not here. Edited by Clockwork Cupcake on Tuesday 9th July 16:19

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here and perhaps you've approached this a bit head-on in error. Perhaps what you meant to say was that if the OP enjoyed the Holdovers that much, perhaps they should give your suggestions a go as well? There's no need to st on anyone's opinion, especially in this thread. I've watched numerous films from here based on what others have enjoyed and I'm certainly not holding anyone accountable if my enjoyment falls short of theirs. (currently watching Super Troopers and it's not looking good )
I'm a big Kevin Smith fan. I know there are LOADS of people who don't enjoy him or his films. That said, this little clip has been doing the rounds recently where he reflects on how he speaks of things now given his recently changed life perspective. I'd encourage you to give it a watch. You don't have to drag something down to raise something up.

See also Debt Collectors(s) and One Shot, Gringo and Seized. Scotty has a pretty impressive run of films, all very similar and varying in quality but some are right 'bangers'.Lordbenny said:
