Aftersun - currently on iPlayer and netflix.

An absolute masterpiece, I've not seen anything more powerful. I was a blubbering wreck when it finished and even had a little cry the next morning. I hate myself for pulling the parent card, but as a parent the way the love between the father and daughter is portrayed is devastating in light of the plot.

Just watched Bohemian Rhapsody, actually thought it was quite average but for Rami Malek who was in turns a gross caricature and mesmerising, so just like Freddie. Worth a watch even just for the music...and I'm not a huge Queen fan!

In a Violent Nature

Some kids take a necklace from a fire tower deep in the woods.
However this fire tower and necklace was holding a Michael Myers type entity in the ground, he has now awoken to reclaim said necklace and get revenge on those that disturbed his resting place.

Filmed in 4:3 ratio and paying homage to slashers of old.

There's a lot of scenes where the camera is just filming the killer walking through the woods which got old quite quick.

There isn't much of a story either, however what saves this film are the really gruesome ways the killer makes his way through his victims.

5.5, extra point for the violent kills.

In the land of saints and sinners

A pick 'n' mix of Irish talent support Liam Neeson being old Liam Neeson as an aged/retrired hitman picking a fight with an IRA cell hiding out around his quiet village.

4 Bushmills out of 10

Being rural Ireland the cars and pubs were probably current hehe

In Bruges
I've seen it before but apparently so long ago I couldn't actually remember any of the plot. A decent film only slightly let down by Colin Farrel's eyebrows. Starts slow with not a lot happening as Farrel and Brendan Gleeson as 2 assassins sent to hide out in Brugge and wait further instructions from a rather psychotic Ralph Fiennes, but picks up nicely. Blink and you miss Ciarán Hinds in a role that's so short I don't think he's even in the credits biggrin
I love this film, it's rare for a film to be so darkly funny and emotionally hard-hitting at the same time but Martin McDonagh does an amazing job. I'm continually annoyed they've not released Banshees on physical media for the same reason, another of his films that was just beautifully funny and mesmerising at the same time. Ralph Fiennes steals the show for sure.

Ambulance (2022)

I'd ignored this as just another Michael Bay shoot them up but someone said it should be viewed as a comedy so I gave it a go.

I'm convinced it's a satirical pisstake on the heist genre. From the references to other Bay movies, Jake Gyllenhall chewing the scenery, the Heat style heist that immediately descends into farce, the barefoot bank robber that felt like a pisstake of Brodies brother from Point Break, the bonkers premise (a bank robbery in the present day, even questioned when the FBI agents therapist says "bank heists? People still do those?"), the absurdity of everyone trying to keep this one cop alive whilst leaving this wake of destruction without a single fk being given to anyone involved, the mental surgery scene, the respraying of the van into lime green and the comedy sneaking away and so on.

It was sold as a serious Heat-esque action thriller but it's more National Lampoon's Heat.
I was also suitably impressed by Ambulance, I'd written it off as all style over substance and whilst that is still al little true it was a lot of fun to watch. The camera work especially was amazing. Very decent action flick.

I enjoyed Sisu (NowTV) last night.

I really, really didn't enjoy Meg2, but that's understandable because it was complete and utter st. To be fair, the last 45 minutes might have been brillianf, but I'd turned it off by then.

A Quiet Place Day One - doesn't quite have the same horror and suspense as the first two movies, but it's still no less compelling. It's very cat and mouse, borrowing heavily from Alien in some areas. Which is no bad thing. Well worth a watch.

The Bikeriders

Based on a real book (stay for the credits to see the actual photos from the book), tells the story of the first motorcycle clubs. The three leads in this are all fantastic, I hadn't realised how big Comer's role was tbh but she probably has the biggest slice of the script with her rambling monologues. Austin Butler continues to be one of the most mesmerising people on film, watching this film with Tom Hardy starting to now look his age I couldn't help feel we were watching the dawn of another massive young star as another moves into the next phase of his career. Hardy will now no doubt start to move into more dramatic roles (not that he hasn't done those before) but I'm eager to see more of his emotive work, I think he does his best work when he's doing less within the role itself. Just being still, talking. The man's a genius. Butler's the same, every scene he's in you can't help but be drawn in. Very exciting to watch him grow.

The rest of the cast are also brilliant in this but overall I was left a little wanting. I think it's just personal preference, but I just didn't get sucked in by the story of the group and neither did I really buy into any of the stakes. Not a fault of the film, I just couldn't help but feel that Sons of Anarchy has done the whole MC gang as family story the best your ever going to see it done (over a much longer format of course) the whole time I was watching it. You can kind of see where the story going as well right from the start so it never surprises you.

That said it's a very well-made and well-acted film, I certainly enjoyed watching it but it's not something I'll be rushing back to watch in the future.

Yes, it was

First one had some entertaining moments if nothing else, but avoid the second.

Decided to have a Broken Lizard weekend. Super Troopers, Club Dread and Beerfest, which of all the films they made is still my favourite.

Also surprised to see they are all still together and making films, I'm guessing this style of comedy is out of date in modern Hollywood? The TV show Tacoma FD was a half decent effort, Quasi though seemed a bit of a mess.
Super Troopers is still up there with Airplane and Life of Brian in terms of just being hilarious the entire way through for me, and probably my favourite of the 3.

"It smells like sex in here".

Don't think they quite hit the same heights in any of the follow ups, although Beerfest had some great moments.

To make up for my previous, lacking and mere listing Films I Watched... wink

Death Wish on Prime

Bruce Willis remake of the original, set in modern day Chicago.
Vigilante justice dished out by a respected surgeon, with a happy ending.... not *that* sort!
Elizabeth Shue co-stars, for a short period.

Catch the Killer on Prime

The hunt for a killer sees a cop put on secondment with the FBI.
Junior cop puts all the FBI resources to shame whilst many were killed in the process.

Vendetta, 2013, Prime.

Danny Dyer, playing, well, Danny Dyer. Jimmy Vickers, a special operations officer, is on a mission to hunt down a violent gang that murdered his parents, while his comrades are on his tail trying to stop him.

Always been a guilty pleasure of mine. He goes out for his parents killers, and one by one kills them. Amusing watching violent little chavs being bumped off in ever more imaginative ways. If you like Jason Statham stuff then this is one for you.

I confess that I have never heard of Super Troopers. Although obviously I have heard of (and seen) Airplane! and Life of Brian.

A quick Google suggests that it's only available on Disney+ unless you want to pay a rental fee on one of the other platforms.

Opening scene on YouTube sets the tone for the rest of the film, however unlike other films of the time that had fantastic openings the quality didn't really drop at any point during the film.

Worst case, you've spent £3.50 to watch Brian Cox urinate on the side of a police car....

Super Troopers was a miss for me. The comedy just didn't hit my wavelength. Same with Life of Brian.

Airplane! was a classic though, up there with Top Secret, Hot Shots and Dumb & Dumber.

I watched a film last night. It just too me a couple of minutes to remember what, that's how memorable it was. Jolt, Kate Beckinsale as a woman with anger management issues trying to find who killed her date.
