Discussion
Couple of Oldies
Black Rain - Michael Douglas, Andy Garcia 1989
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9V2gN_a3P8
Interesting, but not great. Garcia is having fun though. 5/10
AND
Three days of the Condor - Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway 1975
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sov8R9PNVwg
Gave up about half way in. The whole subplot with Faye Dunaway grated. 3/10
ps Heptopods not tentacles!

Arrival, had never heard of this before but it popped up on Netflix. A different take on the aliens landing movie. Have to say I enjoyed it 7 arms out of 10 tentacles.

A similar conceit is Rising Sun (1993) starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes. Similar idea of 'Westerners have no clue in Japan', only Sean Connery's character is an expert in Japanese culture. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9V2gN_a3P8

Trigger Warning - Netflix
Jessica Alba is back as some sort of overpowered government military personnel.
After her dad dies in mysterious circumstances in a mine accident she takes over his bar in the middle of the dessert that's attached to said mine.
She soon gets hassled by the local gang and her skills are called into action after uncovering a conspiracy.
Tbh you could have thrown any B-list actor in here looking for work and the outcome would have been the same as it's so run of the mill.
Nice to see Jessica back but you've seen this film a million times before.
4/10 disappointing.
Oh man - it is bad isn't it? It's not that I disbelieved you but... Jessica Alba... yeah, I should have believed you. I'm halfway through and it's absolutely terrible. Every cliché from the story progression, the acting (waiting to be punched), to the lines they speak. I wonder if actors cringe when they deliver such crap.Jessica Alba is back as some sort of overpowered government military personnel.

I think 4/10 is too generous - there wasn't even anything nice in Jessica Alba to see. The part she played was written for a man, surely?

Spectral (Netflix)
This is actually alright, better than you might think.
The A-Team stuff at the end is a bit daft and of course it's too long™ but I enjoyed it overall. There's enough new ideas and cool robot stuff to lift it out of the massive pile of cliched and forgettable sci-fi shooty films.
Just the fact that I can remember having watched it at the weekend makes it stand out from a lot of stuff on Netflix.
Ghostbusters
The original one. It's still good

just watching The Mummy (1999) - what a fantastic film, even after 25 years. Yes some of the SFX are showing their age but the casting is top-notch, the story fun and it moves along at a good clip - very similar I guess to Indiana Jones 1 & 3 (even though I like IJ2 I'll admit it's not as good as the other 2).
3.5 canopic jars out of the 4 needed
just finished The Mummy Returns (2001) and it really isn't anywhere near as good as its forebear - probably not helped by having a precious little kid front and centre and some dreadful (even for the time) SFX when it came to the Scorpion King. That said it's still enjoyable and Imhotep's final moments are (IMO) quite touching 2.5 canopic jars out of the 4 needed3.5 canopic jars out of the 4 needed
Away for a little break so won't be watching no.3 until, probably, next week (I recall that's it's the weakest of the 3)

IIRC didnt The Mummy Returns run out of money and the Scorpion Kings VFX ended being done with 10p from behind the sofa.
the 3rd - ugh
there are rumours as another one - (yes lets not talk about Tom Cruises version) - with the same cast.......

The Mummy is one of those films no matter where it is when you turn over to it, you end up just watching it from that point on.

I don't believe it was a budgetary issue re the CGI, they just ran out of time and had to rush it. Due to The Rock's wrestling schedule he didn't have enough time to do all the scanning they needed so they ended up having to work with what they had in a very short time period, hence why it looks as rough as it does. I read somewhere they only finished the scene 8 days before release.IIRC didnt The Mummy Returns run out of money and the Scorpion Kings VFX ended being done with 10p from behind the sofa.

Inside Out 2 becomes the fastest animated movie to pass a $1billion dollars at global box office, beating Frozen 2 by 6 days.
So despite rumours of the death of Cinema, if you make a movie people want to see they will still turn out to see it.
Watched the first one last night, very, very clever and really quite deep!! I have recently had mental health issues and much of it hit the mark for me...I was, I'm not ashamed to say, a bit emotional in places. Gonna see the new one this week. A very emotional movie as all the good Pixar movies are. The death of the child so the adult can be born. A Quiet Place: Day One
Not the monster mash, large city, large army assault movie I thought it was going to be. Much different as it follows the story of a dying cancer patient when it all kicks off in New York city.
7-10 Decent, nice story but a tad short and it made the massive sin of a time jump (maybe 10-30 mins) where people figured the sound thing out but it never explained how.
