Apple TV+ - what gems have you found?

That’s For All Mankind ticked off the list, outstanding - can’t wait for a new series of that, one of the best things I’ve seen on TV in ages…
Indeed. I just hope the next series comes out before my free subscription ends. Absolutely fascinating television. Already mentioned but Greyhound (film about the WW2 Atlantic convoys) is worth a watch as is - for those of a certain age - the Beastie Boys story.
Given the number of pretty high profile artists who present shows on Apple radio I hope they can do more of these…
Ted Lasso series 2 off to a pretty strong start too.
I have an annoying habit of buggering around with my phone and only half watching things on TV. Probably testament to the quality of the above shows that they have had my full attention throughout, and the phone remains untouched. My partner found this as well.

Is that a serious question?
Clubs have training grounds, all of them.
I’m aware of that, but they always seem to be in the same place in the show. It seems to magically transform from training ground to full stadium.Clubs have training grounds, all of them.
For example they go from training to the same change rooms they use during matches, but there is no sign of a huge stadium in the outside shots club. Maybe I’m just not paying enough attention.
It's a comedy drama. Not a documentary.

I gave it a try and switched it off after 3 or 4 episodes. Couldn't stand it. I think my problem with it is them taking actual historic characters and killing them off before the accomplishments that made them extraordinary. Plus it forces the viewer to make many extreme leaps of credibility on other areas. I found it quite unpalatable.Greg_B said:

I enjoy Ted Lasso so far and hope it keeps up the high standard of S1. The Morning Show took a couple of episodes to get going but by the end of S1 it was excellent, so I have hopes S2 will maintain that. Not a whole lot else on offer reaches the level of those 2. I watched 1971 and while parts of it were very good, overall it was very up-and-down with the producers making some rather incredulous claims of links between music and societal changes. The emphasis on certain things like Oz magazine and the US TV series An American Family seemed utterly out of place as well. Yesterday I gave the Mark Ronson series "Watch The Music" a try and dear me, E1 was all about Autotune which made my stomach turn over, but which demonstrated the utter lack of talent most of today's stars have, and so was ultimately depressing. I wonder how many people are paying them the $25 or so they are asking to rent some of the paid content on offer there. Seems very pricey.

Whilst what one likes is entirely subjective, personally I would say that Apple's original content is leaps and bounds ahead of anything the other platforms are putting out. The problem is that there's not much of it. It could be that they're going for a quality over quantity approach or it could be that it takes time to produce good content and they are relatively new entrants to the space.Greg_B said:

I found it pretty believable in particular the political meddling in the space programme, the social attitudes portrayed, and thought that Nixon was really well depicted. I certainly don’t think it pushed the bounds of credibility to breaking point. There was one deus ex machina the reaction to the space handshake in the final episode but I can live with it as s3 could be incredible judging by the teaser at the end of s2

Which historical characters would that be? I can’t remember any out of place deaths in the first 4 episodes, although there were a couple of untimely deaths implied to have been avoided.funinhounslow said:

I certainly don’t think it pushed the bounds of credibility to breaking point. My problem is that it doesn't really know what audience it's going for. The initial pitch seems to have been 'space drama alternate history where Nasa keeps going with the moon after Apollo'. I readily signed up to that, and it is sort of delivered, but it also wants to be a portrait of social changes in the late 20th century, a study of emerging feminism, and a soap opera.
I'm happy to watch all of those things but not necessarily at the same time and in the same script. When we spent 20 minutes on the trauma of completing a teenager's college application, I rather gave up with it.

I decided to watch the most recent episode of Ted Lasso in my lunchbreak.
It’s a Christmas special! In August?
What’s that all about, then?
I thought the same. So far S2 is not as good as S1, the whole premise is wearing thin for me.It’s a Christmas special! In August?
What’s that all about, then?
I doubt I’ll last the free 12 months.

Apart from that I think the second series is shaping up nicely. I like the Dutch footballer character and the club sponsor story pretty well done…

Likely pandemic-related and due to the delays in getting production of S2 restarted. No doubt that Christmas episode was originally supposed to air late last year. It’s a Christmas special! In August?

Hannah Waddingham has quite the singing voice.
