Netflix - What gems have you found? (NO SPOILERS) (Vol. 2)
Discussion
Make My Day
(weird font makes it look like "Mako my day")
An 8-part anime series that uses CG animation, and is clearly heavily influenced by Aliens and Starship Troopers.
It starts off well with a pleasing hard sci-fi aesthetic, but by Episode 4 I was starting to lose interest a little but was staying with it.
Then I read this review, which makes me wonder whether or not to stick with it. (TL;DR, the review says that it rapidly becomes formulaic and stale)

Enjoyed Scavenger's Reign. Entertaining and enthralling world-building, very good quality art work and intriguing story telling. Anybody know of similar? I've tried Blue Eyed Samurai, Pacific Rim and a few others... .
I would repeat my recommendation of 1984's pre-Ghibli Nausicaä of the Valley of the WindIt has a very similar vibe of learning to be in harmony with, rather than in conflict with, potentially hostile fauna and flora.
The visual style also has direct similarities.

It's a beautiful film and I completely get the comparison with Scavengers Reign. It very delicately balances several themes at once and creates one of the best female leads in anything I've seen. Strong, caring and a powerful leader that is actually balanced and believable. A breath of fresh air.
I had to watch the dubbed version as Netflix "forgot" the subtitles at the start of the film but the voice cast is amazing. Patrick Stewart, Edward James Olmos, Uma Thurman, Shia LaBeouf to name a few.
My first introduction to Ghibli and it's certainly made me want to see some more.

And directly off the back of this recommendation (thank you again CC), I watched Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind this weekend ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

It's always a worry when you stick your neck out over something so I'm relieved to find that it was perhaps justified.
Princess Mononoke is very similar, but I would perhaps try Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, The Wind Rises (a definite for aircraft enthusiasts), and Kiki's Delivery Service (Kirsten Dunst voices Kiki in the English dub)
Do not watch Grave of the Fireflies unless you are prepared to cry. I have never been brave enough to.
Oh, and of course, My Neighbour Totoro. Because the icon of Studio Ghibli is Totoro

Has anyone started Boys S4? Any good?
Also, has anyone watched Hit Monkey? Stills of S2 have been teased online.
The boys is on prime? On this Netflix thread and I searched for hit monkey with no results in Netflix. Couldn’t find hit monkey on prime either though. Also, has anyone watched Hit Monkey? Stills of S2 have been teased online.
Ah, I see it’s anime. Not for me anyway.
Big Game
Finnish made film from 2014 - pretty stellar cast considering the budget was only 8.5m - I think a chunk of that went on Samuel L Jackson.
It’s essentially a family film - feel good and with some laughs. A few nods to other films - ET and Alens amongst others.
President of the US has to survive in the Finnish wilderness with the help of a 12 year old local boy.
Not great by any means but a simple fun watch.

I've come across that film in lots of different lists, upsetting/scary/harrowing etc, and because I'm a bit of an oddball those sorts of films massively appeal. Finally got around to watching it weekend before last - maybe I'm a robot, maybe the Japanese/anime way of filming doesn't appeal to me, but it did very little for me. I'm not a total heartless prick, because I could see that it was a bit sad, but I really did think I was settling in for one of the toughest watches of my life based on so many things I'd heard/read. OH well, not to say it's a bad film, but I could easily watch it then go about my day.

Get Out - on Netflix.
Really enjoyed it. Quite awkward at times and a scary last ten minutes.
Nope - also on Netflix.
Gave it 20 minutes then stopped and "remove from continue watching".

However I thought Us was better than Get Out. Really enjoyed it.
Watched the first episode of Supacell tonight. South london based thing (ting?) where six people seemingly randomly get super powers.
Shows promise, but much like when I watched the Marvel show Luke Cage, I feel far too white watching this. Very much aimed at black audiences - that’s not a bad thing but I felt very lost at times with the language and references.
