This is how ridiculous cgi is these days

Ironically you've actually used a very good example of CGI because before that picture was released no one realised that shot was almost entirely digital.

But yes, MARVEL uses a lot of CGI and has created a trend for digitally creating environments and assets far beyond just using it for additional VFX or scenery. This film isn't doing that, they have built everything practically.

It's not that it's bad CGI, it's more that studios deem it more efficient to create a potted plant rather than just stick one behind the actor

Like a few others have said, I thought Covenant was crap, but then I did rewatch it and I thought it was really rather good. Not many films in my life have been moved from crap to good because of one rewatch.

The trailer looks like a re-hash of the first two movies. A completely unnecessary cash in for the next generation of punters (see pretty much every other Hollywood franchise flogging of recent times).

If you loved the originals (two) then they can't really be bettered, so just trying to re-do them with 'better' effects isn't going to work. The only meaningful addition to the series is to move on the story, and they've done that**, and some worked better than others, but none were as good as the first two.

Which makes me wonder, why bother with this one? It seems like a purely money-making exercise, relying on nostalgia and a proven formula.

The only thing which interests me, and why I will probably see it is the title, and the relevance of the name Romulus. Given the obvious reference to a founder of Rome and the well known story, I'm curious about the film's interpretation.
Agree on most of that. (though I wont be watching this newest one)

**I would add that, all the films after the 2 originals have never actually tried to move the story along. Its always been the same old, same old. "stupid characters who you don't care for making dumb choices. And 1 or a number of aliens tracking them down and despatching them like the headless chickens they are"

Only Ripley, Hicks and perhaps Bishop are in any way competent rounded characters who do anything other than tread water till their inevitable demise. And besides the David characters in the 2 prequels the writers of every film have never bothered to give us good characters!

Ironically if this was a terrible MCU film. There would be spin off series from the Alien universe (not you AvP) that explore other races and other creatures. BUt it seems every Aliens is destined to follow the same old formula, slowly gaining the gravitas of Fast And Furious!
I must admit I’m quite surprised by the lack of love for Alien3. I like it as a film. Yes some dodgy CGI, but I found it quite a satisfying end to the original trilogy.

Alien Resurrection doesn’t count as part of it to me.

See I felt the same about Prometheus...ok it didn't quite go to "really rather good" rofl But on first viewing I don't think I've ever rolled my eyes further or more frequently into the back of my head with all the ridiculous choices and idalogue, the characters were just so stupid. However, watching it again knowing they're all idiots made it much more enjoyable and coupled with Covenant (which I liked the first time around) it wasn't actually bad at all.

Alien3 I've always been a fan off, probably looks the most dated of all due to the effects but it had a really gritty feel to it which I enjoyed. Plus an absolutely stacked cast of British acting talent.

I didn't hate 3. It was the first one I watched at cinema release, and on its own merits not a bad movie, but given the inevitable comparisons with the first two movies, it falls short as both are almost perfect specimens of their particular genres.

3 certainly has it's flaws, such as most of the characters being really hard to tell apart, but considering the turmoil it went through to be made, it's surprisingly that it it wasn't a complete disaster

I am always going to enjoy anything with Brian Glover in, Charles Dance is just icing on the cake.

I agree. 3, IMVHO, is certainly worthy of being considered one of the good Alien films. Charles Dance was superb, I thought, I do think the "assembly cut" is a must though, it adds a nice bit to the story.

With all this talk about it, I will have to watch it next time I get Pantsdrunk.

ETA - just bought prey off the back of this thread - so that might get prioritised for pantsdrunk. Mrs is away next weekend!

I'll put this here as it's Alien related, but not Romulus related. Alien 3 was almost a Riddick/Pitch Black movie. From a Facebook post:

A little fun fact about Vin Diesels character, RIDDICK. He was originally supposed to be Ripley's substitute for ALIEN³, if Sigourney Weaver had not returned. Their were several scripts for a possible Alien³, and Riddick creator, David Twohy wrote one of them, including the Riddick character. Much like Alien³, David Twohy's script took place in a prison. Only difference, the prison was a space station owned by Wayland/Yutani and the superiors were doing experiments on death row inmates and splicing xenomorph dna with other creatures other than humans. Riddick was one of the prisoners there, for murder and escaping several other triple max prisons.

Long story short, Twohy's script ended up getting canned, and David Fincher's script ended up being the one we saw in theaters.

But almost a decade later David Twohy decided to do his own thing and make a franchise out of the Riddick character, starting with the low budget cult classic film, Pitch Black.

Thought I'd do a fake Ai poster, had Riddick been the main protagonist in A³. LOL

I posted the actual script to David Twohy's Alien³ 👇🏾 fyi... the original script was written back in 1989, and the Riddick character name was originally called Styles.

I'd never heard that before, thanks for sharing. I do like the Riddick films and can certainly see how this would have worked. They're making another Riddick film now I believe (or in pre production at least).

Similarly & probably better known, Veronica Cartwright who played Lambert in the orginal film was originally set to play Ripley but was switched prior to shooting by Ridley Scott. Might have been a very different vibe had that not happened.
