Who can recommend lesser known good films
Discussion
Some good calls there:-
Delicatessen and Battle Royale are just strange...good cinema, but strange.
Taxi and Eraserhead I'd agree with totally, same with Once Were Warriors. Ronin and Heat too, but they're hardly unknown.
Another Tim Robbins one I really like is Jacob's Ladder...it usually takes 2 watches to "get" what's happening...but very good storyline.
Now for an off the wall comment - Ghost in the Shell!
Manga at it's best, think animated Bladerunner with female lead (but this doesn't quite do it justice)

Am afraid I have no clue about Cube 2 and Hypercube.. has anyone watched these? Wouldn't mind watching them if they are worth it, but I would not be inclined to watch them twice.
Movies to own: Heat, Titus, Donnie Darko, Delicatessen and City of Lost Children, Reine Margot... hum, cannot think of more, credit card is starting to shrink in angst.

To Live and Die in LA
I don't know anyone else who's even seen this, let alone praised it. Well done.
Live and die in LA is a top film.
havnt read the whole thread but first guy asked for low budget little known films
in that case you want
The Cube
made for F all but looks like realy high production values
good story great acting from unknowns
The Ninth Gate with Mr Depp. From an Arturo Perez Reverte book (which is stunning too).
Bubba Ho-Tep with Bruce Campbell as an elderly Elvis stuck in a care home which then gets attacked by a decaying Egyptian mummy. (I kid you not!)
City of Lost Children - fabulous and odd
Although not way off mainstream, I found Chronicles of Riddick, Constantine and Hellboy really good.

Some lesser known stuff from my film collection
Dougal and the blue cat (The only magic roundabout film)
Dark city
The thirteenth floor
The killing zone (spot all the Michael Caine references)
Grosse pointe blank
Holes (best live action Disney film ever)
Blade (Tsui Hawk, remake of the one armed swordsman)
Run Lola run (second best German film ever made?)
O brother, where art thou
Blood, the last vampire (short but sweet)
Spirited away (don't bother with the crappy American dub)
I'm glad I'm not the only person who bought Bubba Ho-Tep.

Fatherland - A murder mystery/political thriller set in 1964 Germany where the Nazis are still in power (having repulsed the Normandy invasion). Germany is seeking an alliance with the USA to help with the still ongoing battle with the Soviets. Star Rutger Hauer as SS-Sturmbannführer Xavier March
The Final Countdown - The USS Nimitz Nuclear Aircraft Carrier, complete with full squadrons of F14s, etc, is thrown back in time to 1941 near Hawaii, just hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. Krik Douglas, Martin Sheen.
The Big Hit - Mark Wahlberg comedy about a sensitive hitman. Great supporting performances by Lou Diamond Phillips and Bokeem Woodbine (as the hitman that has just discovered masturbation).
Richard III - (1995) Ian McKellan wrote the screenplay and starred in this retelling of the classic Shakespearian play. All of the dialogue is kept but the time period has been adjusted to modern times. Two armies in Britain (with Richard's army taking on gradual Nazi style undertones as the movie progresses) fighting for supremacy.
Time After Time - HG Wells pursues Jack The Ripper into the future using the time machine that Wells has constructed.
Montana - Kyra Sedgwick, Stanley Tucci, Robbie Coltrane, Robin Tunney and John Ritter star in this thriller about a professional hit woman targeted by her own organization. Great performances by Sedgwick and Tucci. Coltrane is good as well.

Saw Asian Dub Foundation play a soundtrack to this film in Brighton a few years back.
They'd rewritten the entire score into a stomping array of drum and bass - and then played it live in front of the cinema screen. Most time yo weren't sur if you should be watching the band or the film.
A more varied group of people at an ADF gig I've never seen, the bans received a 20 minute standing ovation at the end of it - I can still feel the goose bumps now.
