Another great film is The Thirteenth Floor. As far as films involving people unwittingly living in computer-generated 'reality' goes, it knocks The Matrix sideways.

Big fan of that movie.

I know we've done this before, but, others to add-
The Straight Story.
Cube.
Exterminating Angel.
The Light at The Edge of The World (dated but still a great psychological battle between 19th century lighthouse keeper (Kirk Douglas} and pirate (Yul Brynner}.

More mainstream classic- Moby Dick is always worth watching.

Finally- I agree about that Aussie movie, The Castle. Understated and very funny.

Love that one.

My take goes to Seppuku (www.imdb.com/title/tt0056058 ). A tale of a samurai that goes to a castle to commit harakiri. Maybe not for everyone but never a film had impressed me so much.

Also Dogville (if you survive the first 10 minutes thou ), Mulholland dr (prepare to use your brain), City of God, Thirteen, Amores perros. These are more well known movies but not exactly mainstream.

Idi I Smotri (Come & See) The story of the German invasion of Belarus during WWII through the eyes of a young boy and the horror he witnesses that totally change him. Incredible film which leaves you numb.

Dead Man's Shoes - One of the best British films in ages.

Until the End of the World - Just a masterpiece.

My vote goes to for:

La Reine Margot - fantastic depiction of La Sainte Barthelemy and good movie in all! I cannot believe it has got Miguel Bose (a Spanish singer) actually playing a decent role.

Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children und so weiter - I think that I like The City best. Great story, great imagery; dark and stilish. I think they are the same directors of Amelie aren't they?

Equilibrium was a fun action film. Entertaining. A mixture of the Matrix and Brave New World. Would not classify it as masterpiece but it is worth a watch.

Il postino is a bit too soppy for me... mind you, I did like The Hairdresser's Husband. Have also seen a mention to "The Tit and the Moon" a Spanish movie I haven't seen, but there are some good productions in Spanish cinema such as "Thesis", Amenabar's first low budget production. "Solas" ("Alone" is another good one.

"Cube" - good one too! For the same amount of disturbance but not fear try "Pi"

"Europe, Europe" by Lars von Trier, disturbing and well made is the only contribution I can think of at the moment. "Titus" is another superb production which had me in tears (much to my shame), big tragedy and big production.

"The Cooler"
Stars the peerless William H Macy.
A great, great, little film.
His revenge on the shagathon couple next door is hilarious.

Seconding "Kentucky Fried Movie", and also "Top Secret" for stupid comedy. These are the two 'forgotten' movies from the "Airplane" stable. Both are very childish, and packed with visual jokes (I recently spotted a new one in KFM after 15 years) and silly lines. With KFM, you should watch "Enter The Dragon" beforehand to appreciate how perfect the "Fistful of Yen" pastiche is.

Nice one! I had almost forgotten about this one.

Just ordered it from Play.com for £4.99!!! Can't wait to see it again!!

Great movie!

Watched 'Smoke' again yesterday. Starring Harvey Keitel. Like that movie very much.

Not unknown, but great: 'The usual suspects'

Saw a movie a few years ago which also was a 'remake' of a Shakespeare story. Actually I only remember the sentence 'A jeep, a jeep, my kingdom for a jeep'. Does anyone know what movie that could be?

On a similar note "Amazon Women on the moon" is worth a chuckle or two.
