Been some great TV series from Aus
Mr Inbetween (2018-2021); is a dark and offbeat comedic drama that follows Ray Shoesmith — an assassin during work hours, and a father, divorcé, brother, and boyfriend in all non-working hours.

Wakefield (2021); Things start to go pear-shaped when this nurse, Nik (Rudi Dharmalingam), gets a song (Dexys Midnight Runners’ ‘Come On Eileen’) stuck in his head. First comes the humming and singing, which is harmless enough – but the earworm leads to darker things, bringing forth deep-seated trauma and childhood memories long buried in his psyche. Again: not easy stuff to visualise. Great acting and cinematography.

The Tourist (2022); Jamie Dornan as a Northern Irish tourist who wakes up in an Australian hospital with no idea who he is or how he got there.
As he tries to find clues to his identity, he encounters enough weird and eccentric locals to fill a travelling circus, and gradually realises that the sinister elements of his past are about to catch up with him.
So far so dark, but what makes this drama sparkle is its leftfield, surreal humour. It’s Fargo meets Spielberg’s Duel meets Monty Python. At one point, Dornan gets stuck in traffic because two turtles are randomly mating in the road.

Colin from accounts (2022); Centred on Ashley and Gordon, two single-ish, complex humans who are brought together by a car accident and an injured dog. Flawed, funny people choosing each other and being brave enough to show their true self, scars and all, as they navigate life together.

Thought The Tourist was awfully dull. Can't imagine what drugs the person was on who thought there were hints of Fargo or Duel etc in it. As a way of stretching a 90 minute (at most) movie over, what, 6-8 episodes it excelled. They drove here, they drove there, they met some Greek blokes and they...went driving with them... .

Off on the New Zealand tangent, Black Sheep. A 2006 comedy horror B movie about genetically modified killer sheep smile

A recent Australian one, Talk To Me, is on Netflix. A group of friends conjour spirits from an embalmed hand.

Australia has made some great movies.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
Walkabout.
Gallipoli.

And finally the cult classic that is:

The cars that ate Paris.

We read Walkabout in English Lit at school, I think in 3rd year (or year 9 for our younger readers). Following reading the book our teacher very kindly thought it would be a good idea for us all to watch the film.

There are certain parts that stay in the mind, especially as a 14 year old boy!!

Dead Calm was an effective thriller; Sam Neil, Nicole Kidman and a murderous Billy Zane when he had hair.

Razorback sticks in my mind. I watched it as a teenager late on a Sunday. Alex Cox had a late night BBC2 slot called Moviedrome where he’d introduce the film & talk about it. I’ve only ever watched it once & that was over 30 years ago but there’s plenty about it I can remember.

Mad Max. The original & it’s great. Chock full of oddball characters from Toecutter, Bubba & Fifi. Another film I watched years ago but revisited fairly recently & I really enjoyed it.

Tim- first thing I saw Mel Gibson in (it was released a year after Mad Max but I hadn’t seen that as I was only 8). I’ve not seen i5 in years but remember it being excellent.

“A five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.”

I found this to be a surprisingly good film, well worth watching

Dead Calm, very good thriller starring a very young Nicole Kidman with Sam Neil.
