We have a pretty average 18ft x 11ft lounge, and am selling my medium end home cinema kit (if anyone wants Anthony Gallo micro ti's let me know!!) since it gets virtually no use, as in a couple movies a month.

Decided a Micro system is the way forward with budget and space constraints, as it's easy enough for everyone in the family to use and will have USB connection for walkman, CD, DAB etc.

Have found a few systems at the right sort of price (under £150) but the power outputs seem rediculously low (around 10 - 25W per speaker). I havent had a micro system for many years and am having doubts that a system like this Sony for example http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/634999/SO... is suitable for a lounge system, are they more for bedroom or kitchen type use?

Anyone successfully using a micro system in their living room? I can accept that it's not going to compare to a seperates, and am realistic about the limitations, but still want to make sure it'll be decent enough as a everyday system.

Also, any recommendations around £150 other than the Sony would be appreciated.

Mine's not really a micro system, it's probably smaller. It's a Denon UD-M31. I've it hooked up to a pair of KEF Coda 9 floorstanders, and it's good enough to shake the pictures next door. I'm not sure if they do a more modern version with USB and the like, but if you want simple stereo with tuner, CD, and a few line inputs, then it's ideal.

Edit: This is the new version, has USB/iPod/iPhone support:

Cheers for the suggestion, it's a way above budget unfortunately, but sounds like a nice system.

No expert but I'd say 10-25w RMS is 'ok' for a room that size.... The ex's mum had a similar system/ room size combination, and it sounded 'nice' - well rounded bass etc. - but as it sounds like you know, you're not going to be able to crank it right up, sit back with a smooth glass of red and enjoy that crystal clear separation between musical parts that you'd expect from a good set of separates...

Truth is that in my case I've got a nice pair of modest floor-standers that never get a proper airing now I live in a flat, through lack of time to enjoy them and fear of upsetting the neighbours - I'd probably be better off with a micro system!
