Plasma or LCD TV - Where to start?

OK as a luddite on the TV front, I have decided to treat the family to a new TV in time for Christmas.

Looking for advice on which is more suited to our veiwing (mainly Sky non-HD), and what are the best deals out there?

Budget is c£600 and maximum c40" screen size.
