My 6 year old rear projection screen just decided to go all 3D on me. I know it is a couple of $30 chips that need replacing but looking at it the job is beyond my heat and hop soldering ability. Anyway, the TV only cost me $500 so it owes me nothing.

So, on to treat myself to a new TV and I took a look at the VT range. Issue is that I need a 65" TV and at this size the VT is $4300 in best buy with 2 sets of glasses or $3600 on line with one. Thing is, I couldn't give a st about 3D TV as I can't see there ever being a time I would use it on this TV. I plan on buying something bigger in the future for a dedicated cinema room. Is there a cheaper model in the Panasonic range that has the same or nearly the same quality picture?

As you may have guessed I am in the US so model numbers are different over here. The VT20 is a best buy only TV and the UK VT20 is sold as VT25 over here.

OK, The TV below looks like it may be nearly as good and is at a decent price. Is this the one to go for?

That's last year's model - which was/is a good TV in its own right, but unless there's a substantial saving, the V20/25 would be the best compromise on the VT, and the G20 a slight further compromise, of sort.
In actuality, you'd probably be none the wiser if you didn't use the extra features it has over the V.
Then again, is there a 65" version in either of those ranges in the US market?

Having been on there I am now seriously considering not buying anything! According to them the Panasonics look good for 5 minutes then the blacks go grey, the greens go red and the clarity is gone.

I'm ashamed to admit this but I used to sell and install plasmas for a living and I'm confused.
I have no idea how to decipher the range and the Panasonic web site looks spectacularly bad. The situation is not helped by Panasonic using random letters and numbers depending on which country you are in.

I would definitely go for one of those 65V20s if there was such a thing over here. Do you think it is a GT20?

The problem with AVforums is they watch their TV's with a light meter and not their eyes wink Im still yet to come across 1 G10 with a blacklevel problem and we have over a thousand of them out on rental! From what I have seen the V/VT20/25 is then best out there but at 65" its too big for the technology 2K resolution wouldnt go a miss wink

So out of the V10 and the S2 which one is better. From what I have read the S2 suffers less with the black issue (if it is an issue at all) but doesn't have the same picture quality of the V10.

S2 is cheaper and newer as well. I would like the swivel base of the VT25/10. From the Panasonic web site it looks like you either go for 3D at this size or S2 and there is no top end 2D TV.

I have found the Panasonic.net website much better than the Panasonic.com site which is just crap.

Thank you for the help.

On the basis you don't have to have a 65" TV, then the G20 would be very suitable, but if the financial aspect isn't in question, then the VT25 rules the roost, and you don't need to wear the glasses for anything but 3D.
Therefore, if you don't buy a 3D BR player, or have those channels in your cable subscription, then you'll only be watching 2D, and the pixel cells of the VT are the best Panny have ever designed, and move the game on from where Pioneer left it, in much the same way they did when Fujita called time on their involvement in this sector.

Put the 3D and glasses out of your mind, the VT is the cuurent SOTA of TV design.
