Replaced to big square CRT with a nice 42" LCD flatscreen thingy today and got rid of all the scart cables as apparently everything is connected via HDMI these days, and i must admit it all does look nice, but i can't connect my old wireless surround set to my new tv and was wondering if there's maybe a plug or connecter type thingy i can buy so we can still use it.

The surround set is this :

The connection looks like this :

Which was plugged into the old tv, and the speakers were behind the couch.

Now my new tv only has this at the back :

Is there anyway i can get my old surround set to connect to this optical audio port or is this not compatible at all ?

And how does it work if i have to get a new surround set, as i've only got 2 HDMI connections, one is connected to the virgin media box and one to the blue ray player. I've also got 1 scart connection but that's connected to my NES (yes, the old 8-bit nintendo, don't laugh).

Any tips/advice welcome peeps smile

If its purely surround sound, You'll only need to use TV Optical out -> Surround Optical In on a new surround system. BUT most of them have DVD Players/Upscalers built in now so will need HDMI aswell.

You could check to see if your virgin box has HDMI component out (Will be the same connectors as the Component in part on the back of the TV) if it does you could go:

Virgin box -> Component In
Blu Ray -> HDMI In
Surround Sound DVD -> HDMI In
Surround Sound -> Audio Optical Out

That would give you HD on all 3 boxes, Plus surround sound for whatever your TV is playing out.

If HDMI is your only option, You could just pickup a HDMI switcher, I have mine setup like so:

Sky HD -> HDMI Switcher
PS3 -> HDMI Switcher
Xbox 360 -> HDMI Switcher
HDMI Switcher -> HDMI In
Surround Sound DVD Player -> HDMI In
Surround Sound -> Audio Optical Out

Theres no difference in picture quality, and the switcher automatically changes when it detects one of the 3 boxes being turned on.
