...ideally with a subwoofer that can be plugged straight into a Panasonic LCD TV, without needing a separate AMP.

All advice appreciated. Just want much better sound quality from the TV/DVD without spendng much! smile

Budget of £200 say? What about the 2.1 speaker systems intended for home computer use??

Depending on how much room you have i'd take a look at the Logitech Z-5500 system. It is a 5.1 system but is only £235 from Ebuyer.

I have it & haven't heard or read any really negative comments about it. Don't think you'll find better for your money.

Thanks for the link, but I think this system needs a separate AMP. I am looking for something that's self-contained - 'plug and play' straight into a TV set! smile

No seperate amp required.

The amp is built into the sub! All you need to do is plug your audio cable form you TV/DVD into the control box and away you go.

O.k. Thanks for th info! However, I'd prefer a 2.1 system to avoid speaker wire trailing around the room and am not too bothered about 'surround sound' at the moment - just very good stereo quality.

So something like that Logitech, but with only front/centre speakers of perhaps a higher quality as I wouldn't have to spend money on rears. smile

Acoustic Energy Aego 2.1 series.

British, loads of What Hi-Fi awards and good packaging/aesthetics. The satellites are tiny, but very heavy (alloy). I've got them mounted in the corners of my kitchen, with the sub hidden under a shelf and connected to my TV and iPhone.

£120'ish from most places. I also added a centre speaker for an additional £30 from AE directly.

Thanks for this - looks ideal. What's the sound quality like when hooked up to the TV and from about 8 feet away? Also - dumb question - but how exactly does the TV connect?

I could write a big long answer about the sound quality, but to be fair the review at: http://www.avreview.co.uk/news/article/mps/uan/90 says it all.

I use the 3.5mm jack lead and plug it into the headphone socket of the tv. On my tv the volume control on the remote also controls the headphone socket (if something is attached). But you can also connect using RCA plugs if your tv has them (most do)
