Am posting on behalf of a friend who is shopping for a new TV. I know sod all but this forum helped me get my TV (Panny TXP42G10) which I still ogle when I see it on the wall a year after buying it, so I was hoping the experts could help me with this as well.

He's got £350 - 400 to play with and size wise he says he's looking for something bigger than 27" but he doesn't know a lot more. It will most likely be wall mounted 12 feet away, though he may possibly just use a TV stand in which case it'll be 6 feet away.

It'll be used mostly for gaming (PS3,) some bluray use and some general TV/film watching.

Any suggestions for what he should be looking at with those requirements?

I bought a Panasonic 37" Plasma (TX-P37X20B) for my aunt from BuyItDirect.co.uk (TV's Direct) for £429 inc VAT on Friday last week.

Cracking set - took it round for her, to replace a crappy old 26" CRT.

She was thrilled!

I had one of these on order from Severnoaks for a while - when I rang for an update they couldn't give me one so I mentioned the Amazon price - he immediately cancelled my order and told me to buy one from Amazon because that was cheaper than they buy them in from Panasonic and he could never hope to match that price.

At least he was honest!

With respect to Digital Direct (I've bought TVs from there before) at nearly £200 more than the Amazon price for an X20, how good would they need to be?

Another 37" X20 owner here! Glad it seems I made a sensible choice!
We got ours from Dixons, £395 which included delivery and collection of our old Hitachi CRT which was a behemoth!
