I am about to replace our 7-year-old JVC AV28X10 28" CRT(100Hz) TV with either a 32" or 37" LCD LED model. The JVC has been an excellent unit and having 3xSCART has been very useful. To my eyes its picture looks superior to many of the plasma and LCD teles owned by friends.

So far I have considered the LG 32LE5900 (a friend has just bought one), Sony KDL-32EX503 and KDL-32EX703, Samsung LE32C650 and the 37" versions. There are reports of the Sonys not being able to display iplayer!

Budget of around £600. We have a small lounge and sit 8-10 feet from the TV.

It will be used with a Humux 9300T (SCART and HDMI) and a Panasonic DVD player (no HDMI, only SCART). The Humux seems to have a limited HDMI output (720p?). I have a Samsung R580 laptop in the lounge that has an internet connection via wi-fi and VGA and HDMI outputs so can be used to provide internet and photo/video playback on the new TV.

THE HD capability is for the future as HD is not currently available in our area.

Any comments or other suggestions?

Before deciding on which size TV to buy I cut two pieces of wood to the size of a 32" AND 37". The 37" piece looked too big for where the TV would go so I bought the 32".

A colleague has a Sony TV (I don't know the model) which had iPlayer capability long before my Panasonic was enabled.

My current 28" CRT TV has a case with a diagonal size of 36" so a 37" LCD TV with a slim surround won't be much bigger.

No one has an opinion! I thought this was Pistonheads where there is always some one with an opinion.

I have just bought this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-KDL37EX503U-Widescree... and am really pleased with it. Speakers are a bit weak but that's the same with most I suspect. 8-10 feet away will make a 32" too small IMO. Go for 37".
Not tried I-player on it but youtube works great- full screen playback and upscaled.

Shop around and you can probably get a DVD player included or bought separately with the change from your budget (they will look horrible through the scart of your existing player!). You can get a blu-ray player for £100 which will upscale your existing DVDs.

Hope this helps- any questions on my TV, let me know!

Thanks for the reply. I am already considering the Sony KDL-37EX503 . According to reviews iplayer was not working on this set in July, but I'm not worried as I can connect my laptop.

whathifi.com carried a review of a number of sets in August and chose the Sony-KDL37EX503U as best buy. The complete review is available from the web-site.

Will DVDs played on my existing DVD player really look that bad on the Sony?

I'm rather irritated that Sony don't supply a printed manual - that really is penny-pinching. And £70 for a wi-fi dongle!

I've just found the manual on-line so that should answer my queries on the set.

The manual is stored on the TV so you see on screen instructions for everything - it's a great idea. I haven't watched a DVD via SCART for a long while but I don't imagine it'll be very satisfying.
I was guided by the What Hi-fi review to be honest - they see so many so if they rate it, I figure it's good enough for me.

I was toying with changing, but I've decided to hold onto the crt until it blows up. 40" Loewe with amazing picture and sound seems like a pity to change it for anything less than HD, once all channels are HD!
