So I am going to change my Arcam Alpha 8 system.

Have not looked into HI FI systems for around 10 years or so, and I thought a good place to start would be LINN.

The Majik seems to be an entry level system, do not want to be spending more than £5000 for everything, would like to spend £500 but thats unrealistic.

So What else should I look to be buying, would prefer British made (yes I know not entirely possible) and would like to connect to the internet to download music and videos from you tube etc

Will also be good if it has an option to upgrade to a Movie System in the future (Majik Movie System)

Any help greatly appreciated.

PS where to buy around the Northants area...

I should think it is entirety possible. ARCAM themselves do the SOLO systems in various forms. Meridian recently bought the Sooloos systems. NAIM do the Uniti systems. I'm pretty certain that some other British manufacturers also do Integrated systems but would need to peruse my Hi-Fi Worlds to find them. It's a case of looking and trying the systems.

Having said all that why do you want to change? The ARCAM systems are still well thought of and it may be better to use the components you have as the basis to improve your system. It's also possible to buy smaller component systems. Cyrus still have the small box format they produced the Cyrus 1 and 2 in. Chord electronics have the "Choral" series" (a little pricey), and the Chordette "Budget" range.

They are very neutral sounding, so if you like your music with some punch and fullness look elsewhere. Also it's not very powerful and struggles with bigger more power hungry speakers, so a lot of users have added power amps which makes having a integrated amp redundant. Not a bad amp but not great either. Maybe look at Musical Fidelity?

For some reason I thought this may be the case. I do like it a bit punchy, my current setup, Arcam with Mission speakers are good but sometimes a bit boomy, the bass gets "flappy" if that makes sense!

Suppose I need to get out and listen to a few setups - Any good HI FI shops in Northamptonshire, anyone?

Whilst the Majik kit may be at the lower end of Linn's range, it's far from just entry level when you compare it to anything else.

I listened to a Majik DS-I with Majik 109's and i was absolutely blown away with it, and certainly for the money when you compare it to the rest of their range.

If you're wanting an AV system rather then hifi, just be aware that the Linn Majik/Akurate Kontrol do not have HDMI input or and HD audio decoding on board, the Akurate Kontrol does have 5 channel analogue input though.

Thanks for the offer, going to go to Leicester asap, see what they are like, as I see they offer Arcam, Linn and Naim. Which are the main brands I have heard of to start.

Will report back!

The naimuniti is an awesome bit of kit. I had one on home demo for a few days but within a couple of tracks I was hooked. I did find speaker cable made a big difference though, I liked the sound of the naim cable but hated how stiff and unmanageable it is so settled on some Chord Odyssey. Can't recommend the naimuniti enough, assuming you 'get' the naim sound.
