Unfortunately the search isn't working; I'm sure this subject has been done to death!

I'm after a TV for my lounge - I was always under the impression that LCD was better than Plasma due to a longer life span of use - which is why I went for an LCD for my bedroom. Now I'm after a TV for the lounge which will be used for cable tv, some HD channels and hooking up a pc with a HD graphics card to watch films on. I originally looked at a 1080p LCD 42 incher, but have now noticed that for only about £100 more I can get a 50 inch 1080p Plasma tv.. All the 50 inch tv's seem to be Plasma also - is this better in bigger sizes then?

Just bear in mind Plasmas need regassing every 6 months or 2000 view hours.

I have a Panasonic 50 inch from 2001.

Used about 2-3 hours a night.

Still going strong.

Go to a shop, try out both and see what you like.

To me, LCD looks very sharp but a bit tiring and overblown. I've got plasmas. But... the point is you need to decide by looking at them.

I though it was every 10000 hours. I was actually told that again in the shop today. His mate in the pub had told him, so it was obviously true.

I think the other posters were joking to be honest.

My plasma is a few months off being ten years old and it most likely past the stated 'life' of it, that is the point at which apparently the brightness has reduced to 50%.

As far as I can see mine is exactly as good as when I first had it.

The universal answer is Plasma.

It is inherently technically superior to LCD in terms of displaying a moving image.

Ah yes, that's the newer longlife gas being used then.
Just like engine oils, you can make do with ordinary stuff, or use the extended drain type.
Should give a smoother picture for longer, if you believe the marketing blurb!

IMO Over 42" it has to be Plasma, especially if watching Standard def content - best thing to do is go somewhere that they set the TVs up properly for side by side comparisons.

We sell Panasonic TVs where I work - I support the IT systems, not sell anything - but get a good chance to compare them side by side. When my parents wanted a new TV, we decided that the 37" Panasonic Plasma was the best - and it is stunning for the money.

If you're spending a bit of money try to get a free warranty thrown in.

My plasma at home last year came directly from a distributor, they advised running it with the brightness and contrast down for the first month which I found a bit odd.

The picture is great, especially now I've switched the dynamic power saving off smile

You mean LED backlit LCD?

Changing the lamps doesn't make LCD any better at rendering a moving image...
