bit of a situation
Discussion
ok, so ive just bought my first 50" plasma flat screen tv for my bedroom, although highly over-sized and silly, its amazing and i love it, yet all females ` dont see the point ` aka - my girlfriend and my mam lol, so heres the situation, i just bought a home cinema system thing, it has 5 speakers and one subwoofer, i was hoping to use this with my normal TV yet cant !! are all the systems like this ?? sorry about it being a bit of a dence question guys
Look in the manuals for both the TV and the cinema system: You're looking to find if the TV has either a stereo phono output or perhaps an optical (digital) output. Then you need to see if your cinema system has either of these inputs (in fact check this first as it's a deal breaker if it has no external inputs).
Then it should be a matter of buying a suitable cable(s) to connect the two items and when you want to watch TV via the cinema system, turn the TV speakers right down and select the appropriate input (that you've plugged your optical or phono cables into) on the cinema system. Providing you can get this to work, you should also be able to select a surround mode (such as Dolby ProLogic II or DTS NEO) which will create a 5.1 channel sound from stereo TV. It's not as good as proper 5.1 from a DVD or BluRay, but it enhances many TV programms nicely I find. I've never listened to my TV's speaker for the last 13 years or so.
Hope this helps.

Had my home cinema running 5.1 for probably 10 years now through an old Thomson CRT TV. Output from the TV to Surround it via a switchable SCART (could have brought an auto switch one but too tight ). The TV speakers have never been used.
