Hi all,

Looking to replace my Pioneer LCD due to its frankly dire motion-handling.

Obvious choice was a Panny 42" G20 plasma - great value at the moment.

Unfortunately, I popped into M&S this lunchtime to have a look and instantly noticed a flickering in my peripheral vision as I viewed this set. It would just not go away.

Gutted.

So what else is there that would give me an improved PQ / motion-handling (i.e. smooth, not juddery or blurry) at this price point?

Max size is 42".

Are you sure it wasn't any of the following causing the flickering:

the setup of the display TV
the media source and quality
the lighting ambience

Fluros, almost certainly.

I'm sensitive to that and ours doesn't flicker.

If you want one, buy it on-line, or from Costco if available there, then you can send it back if you're not happy.

TECKNOPUG - not sure what setting it was on but the ambient light was relatively low for a show room. It was running a BBC HD feed....

Plotty - fluros?

Flickering lights in the showroom.

You can get like a 'zoetrope' type effect like if you film a TV.

Unless it's a store that hasn't been refurbed for a long time then they'll be using electronic ballasts with their fluorescent's and they don't flicker.

At a guess - strobe effect due to fluorescent lights...

If I bought this from Amazon to try it in my home, do you imagine they would accept a return if flickering was still an issue?

Bearing in mind it is more of a biological sensitivity rather than a fault with the set?

They don't have any choice if you return within 7 days.

Couldn't you look at one somewhere else - maybe a Panasonic shop will have a home demo capability?

I notice a couple of the reviews on the Amazon site mention flicker.

Might try and check out a Philips 42PFL9664 to - very, very good reviews for an LCD.

Any of the Sonys that use Bravia Engine 3... (eg. KDL-40W5500 would appear to be available within your budget, just about).

If you stretched your budget a little bit you might even find a 200Hz model...
