Mate of mine is off to Sevenoaks Hifi in Reading (confused) on Friday and has seen a TEAC hifi system with Wharfedale speakers on offer for about 1k.

I've no real idea but would like to guide him yes/no - any ideas folks?

I think this is the system in question.

For £1000 you could get some proper separates.

Which would wipe the floor with that.

Must be honest and say I've not looked at low end separates for a while. But my first real hi-fi was £1000 all in for CD player, amp and floorstanding speakers.

My recommendation would be to go to a decent shop with a listening room.

I spent a good afternoon auditioning that setup. Your mate will be very surprised how much the sound will change just by changing one of the three components.

A decent shop will advise from the ground up let him test out the options and he can leave with exactly what he wants at the end of the day. He will get much, much more value for money and a system he will be much more happy with doing that.

I have Cambridge audio separates (blueray player, dab tuner and amp) with monitor audio speakers - I can recommend these although I am sure there are many other options.

No probs, I could reel off that I still love my Arcam amp and CD player, and they still do me proud 12 years on.

However, the main point of going in to test with an open mind is because at the end of an afternoon he will discover what sound *he* likes and he will end up with £1000 of kit which is perfect for what he wants.

Just had a chat with him and the place does have a listening room too so he is going to spend some time in there. Looking at some reviews on the web it seems like a pretty good piece of kit but there is nothing like trying other options.
He says his brother is going too with about 1k to spend as well so they are hoping to cut some sort of deal. smile
