Chaps,

I am in the market for a new TV that will be used solely for gaming and maybe the odd DVD, but 99% gaming.

What would you recommend for the £500 - £700 price range?

You could probably get away with an LCD for a bit less than that, if you are only ever going to use it as a games monitor.

Think I've made up my mind, Panasonic 42" G20.

i picked up a LG 50" recently (£720), 80% of usage for gaming (plus some movies via HTPC, and occasional TV when the mrs is watching soaps in the lounge and im not in a gaming mood)

absolutely great TV - especially where gaming is concerned the bigger the better imho.

that was the LG50PK590 .. i think they do a 50PK390 (?) cheaper which is basically the same TV minus HD Freeview (and netcast/THX Cinema settings etc) .. great value.. especially if your not interested in HD freeview you may aswell save some quids.

my gf's parents have a 50" samsung which they bought for about £500 which is a great tv also, looks pretty good (HDMI feeds) but SD isnt as good as the LG in my opinion, but if your TV is only used for gaming (hd/component/hdmi inupts) then its SD quality is not a concern so i would say that would be also be a good purchase.

gaming the bigger the better really, even if you sit really close (I sit directly infront/approx 2.5m from my 50")

Same as mine. Great bit of kit. Still think it's a bit over-kill if just being using as a digital monitor though.

Yeah I do agree and am starting to sway towards a 46" LG plasma or a 46" S20 rather then a G20...

Will the S20 be a better choice for my needs?

A G20 is a superior telly to all those mentioned. I was more referring to your thread where you had a set budget for the whole home-cinema. Spending £700 on a G20 won't leave you with much left for anything else.

If you have £700 to spend on a TV, the G20 is the best that you will get. If you have £1000 to spend on a TV, Amp, Speakers, Cabling etc AND it's mostly going to be used as a digital monitor for gaming, then maybe look at spending less on a TV and more on the other equipment. Cut your cloth accordingly, so to speak.

Will you be gaming alone, mostly? If so, maybe consider investing in some really good head-phones, rather than the whole cinema surround sound equipment?

To be honest the budget is negotiable, £1000 was just a ballpark figure, will I really tell the difference between the S20 and G20 for gaming?

Dunno. I've got a G20 and it's superb, no matter what media source you throw at it.

I bought this one a couple of months ago too! Mega TV, cant fault it at all.

I play COD, Forza and Red Dead usually. The refresh rate has never been anything but perfect. Cant recommend it enough.

Wouldnt be able to comment on sound, it is hooked up to 5.1 for everything. I would suggest doing the same if cash can stretch to it. In my opinion, flat panels just cant produce decent enough sound.

Yup, I went for the 42" G20 and the Onkyo HTS 5305 5.1 system, it is absolutely excellent.
