Just spoke to my parents and it turns out their ten year old CRT Toshiba has bitten the dust. They don't spend much time watching tv and almost never watch a DVD. Everything they watch is standard def, nearly all of it through a freeview set top box.

Is the Panasonic TX-P42X20B a reasonable television for someone with fairly basic viewing requirements? It's available from Amazon for £426.

It's been a while since I seriously looked into which tvs are good or not (and I ended up with Panasonic myself which has been excellent - back then Panasonic and Pioneer seemed to be the ones to have but I'm not sure if anything has changed - except for the loss of Pioneer from the market). Any other suggestions welcome.

X20s are pretty much the default choice if you just want SD broadcast.

As above, you're on the right path with that choice, and the Plasma version too.
