I am at last looking at replacing my old CRT Sony.

It seems that Panasonics are the most highly regarded make at the moment. I want a 42" I think but can someone please confirm the difference between a TX-P42G20B and a TX-P42S20B. I know the G has Freesat which I don't think I am bothered about. Apart from that, are there differences in picture quality etc.? I have tried to compare the two but being a bit of a numpty when it comes to electrical items I would appreciate a bit of guidance. The TV will sit on a stand in the corner of a room 20' long and 12'6" wide.

S is cut-price G - no ISF memory slots for calibration, nor THX mode for all but the Home Cinema aficionado.
That and a couple of other things, but still retaining the NEO panel, makes it a very good compromise option.
At only 42", unless you're watching from 4-5' away, the full HD resolution won't be of much concern either, so you might be happy with even the X20 HD Ready version.

So, the all important question, is the G worth the extra money?

For me, the S was simply not an option, if only because the S is on a fixed stand, while the G has a degree of rotation.

Come on, do some of the thinking for yourself!
Use the compare feature on Panasonic's site, and see if the extras are of interest to you, and what you'll be doing with the TV.

Have a look on avforums, sure there are some panel probs with the G's reducing brightness after a number of hours...

I have a th42pz85b and love it though. Gutted its soooo much cheaper than what I paid 2 years ago.

Thank you, a very useful and constructive reply.

I would rather have heard the opinions of customers who have actually bought the unit as to whether they felt it was worth the extra money. A pretty harmless request I would have said.

I thought so too, that's why I posted it.
Now, seeing as you're wanting someone to make your decision for you, then the simple answer is "No".
The G is more than you will likely make use of, and for all intent purposes, the S is more than ample for your needs.....based on the assumption of opting for a 42" one, corner citing it, and no mention of movies, etc.

So as a general run-of-the-mill background noise maker, and occasional visual distraction inducer, it has all the boxes well and truly ticked.

I gave up waiting for my Hitachi PD to conk out and moved into the bedroom so I could have a new Panasonic one in the living room! smile

Regarding the "floating blacks" issue - I've only ever seen this with the dynamic contrast adjustment turned on, and with that enabled I'd expect the contrast to change, it's the whole bloody point! Granted I haven't read the thread on AVForums to see if it occurs under other conditions but I haven't seen it so there!
