Having grown up in the CD years I have no real recollection of analogue music (good quality). I have acquired my fathers Rega Planar 3 which I am in the process of upgrading/servicing. By the time I have finished there wont be any realistic improvements to be made.
How likely is this to introduce me to the values of analogue. There are obvious cash rich alternatives, but in terms of testing the waters is this going to be enough, to "teach me".
My current digital; is Naim 282/super cap/250.2, Rokasn K2, Sonos WFS DAC2.
Part of me wants to love analogues because a good TT would look bloody cool in my flat. Clearly not a great reason to buy one....

A Planar 3 is a perfectly good way of spinning vinyl, the danger is spending a fortune on modding it rather than just buying a better tt. Only you will know if it sounds any good after listening to it and then comparing some vinyl you are familiar with on other tt's. What mods are you doing to it?
I was a 'die hard' analogue listener until I bought my second CD player.
The first CD player had a hard sound, typical of it's period (it was cheap) but the second one I bought was much better.
The sheer relief of not having to endure the pops and crackles from vinyl, despite taking great care of my collection was a revelation.
I recently dug out my old turntable and played some vinyl stuff, and the only conclusion I could reach was that the bass from the turntable may have been ever so slightly better - however this may also have been due to inaccuracies in the RIAA correction of the preamp (the correction curve changed back in the 80's IIRC).
I still prefer my CDs though!
I also use a Logitech Squeezebox for casual listening, but being old fashioned I do prefer to hold a CD in my hand.

That's all good and I'm glad that you're happy with what you can hear. Now, give me all your vinyl The first CD player had a hard sound, typical of it's period (it was cheap) but the second one I bought was much better.

I had a Rega 3 for ages, great value/quality. Went to a Michell Gyrodec next, excellent, visually and sonically!
I've got a Gyrodec too. Fabulous piece of kit. I managed to damage to tone arm in the house move, so I've upgraded it to a Tecnoarm with a Goldring D12 stylus.I've "upgraded" most of my vinyl to CD now for the sake of convenience, but when I'm just sitting listening to music I almost always go for the vinyl. Except in the case of very rare/expensive bits, in which case the CD will do.

Started with a Thorens TD160B mk2 (well after a couple of kiddy record players) and when I upgraded I never really got on with the Gyrodec, though they are well regarded, I carried on with a Thorens 321. I now have a Roksan Radius 5, fully upgraded, with a BPS and I love the pace and timing of it. Would really recommend one if you're looking for something circa £1k.So, just ordered; new belts, arm wire kit, bearing, ruby bearing, isolation plater, spindle, motor mount, granite plinth. No cartridge yet. Any suggestions, sub 100 quid??? I also spent an hour (or two...) polishing the lid with Helicopter canopy scratch remover! Bloody slow work. Might replace the motor and power supply at a later date. Going to run it all through my Fathers Nait 1, which I have just nicked as I can't justify the Naim phono stage just yet...

I just get my favourite stuff on vinyl now, iTunes for party stuff & kitchen music etc.
ETA - Good luck with that lot OP - good project!

I reckon the lid polishing will have the greatest effectCheck out...http://www.vinylengine.com if you haven't already. Loads of Rega stuff on there.

Some nice MF kit there. Are those stacked pieces X-A50 power amps? I like buying the vinyl but get a bit fed up with some bands releasing albums as a double album so you have to get up three times to flip / change the record.
I think the model of buying the record and allowing a free MP3 download is a good one and one that the book industry could adopt for the likes of iBooks / Kindle.
