Im building a new house at the moment and need to put in speaker cables before plastering. Are ceiling mounted speakers good for the surround sound or is it better to stick to more conventional speakers, Its a fairly straightforward lounge Rectangular in shape with tv mounted centrally on front wall. Can anyone recomend good ceiling speakers for surround sond.

Thanks

You can get good ceiling surround speakers but the sound will be a compromise. If possible put some wall or floor mounted surrounds in and pull wires accordingly.

If you have no choice have a look at these by Atlantic Technology

or Sonnance SRS1.

Put bipole/dipole speakers into Google for research.

I am not a great audiophile (so couldn't say on the sound quality) but remember seeing some speakers that can be plastered into the wall so become an integral part of the wall. I would consider them so no wires or speakers to locate or see.

I've got some Sonance 623 speakers in the ceiling as my rears. As has been said they are a compromise but if you buy decent ones they work pretty well.

I think the in wall company you've seen is http://www.amina.co.uk/news.html ; sound quality is excellent too. Link is to some press reviews.

I'm surprised you hadn't sorted that level of detail out before you started building. Did you think about multi room entertainment systems? Network cabling throughout at the time of wiring, etc.

Car speakers can work well in some situations, like yours clearly, but car audio speakers are 4 ohm units in most cases and the majority of surround amps are only happy with 8 ohm loads and above.
