... says the gf to me one morning.

So i wander over to it, turn the plug off, back on, and start it up.

The sound comes on for a second, with no picture, but then switches itself off flash a little red LED 4 times in a row.

The TV in question is a 3-4 year old Sony Bravia, either 40 or 42", can't remember now.

From a quick bit of reading it would seem either the transformer or backlight has gone, with the consensus being that if it's the backlight a new TV is cheaper than fixing it.

Bugger. Wasn't expecting that to die so quickly.

Look at it this way. It's an opportunity to bin it and get a decent TV.

ZING!

The one in the living room is still going strong. That's a Sony too, so i'm expecting it to die any day...

Think of it as a chance to buy a decent TV. You'll know a decent TV because it'll have the word "Panasonic" on the front.

If the 46" upstairs will fit in my room i'll be looking for a 50-something inch for upstairs.

Might be a problem as the gap in my room for the TV looks to fit 42" maximum, and there is no more room between the sub and hifi rack upstairs for more screen space.

Well... I'm not a fan. Two friends have recent big bravias less than 3 years old (42" and 46") and they are both envious of my decrepit pre-historic 768 res 42PX60.

Thanks. Are these cheaper deals on 'graded' tv's worth it in your view?

Seeing the OP's blown up TV is a Sony, I'd say no.

Never liked Sony TVs, used a few (I had a housemate who had Sony everything), and was never impressed by the TVs. VCR, DVD Recorders, amps, and the like were fine, just the TVs I was never impressed by.

I'm thinking about a new 50". I was going for the default Panasonic option, but then saw this:

http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/lg/50...

It's got good reviews and is £600 cheaper. An expert can probably tell the difference, but for normal viweing, it looked fine to me.

Fair play that seems much cheapness for 50"

And the viewing angle is very narrow.

Sony use Samsung film and their own processing electronics.

Panasonic 50V20 would see you happy for many years.
