I've connected my laptop to my hi-fi amp with a 3.5mm stereo jack to twin phono lead. There's no sound at all coming from the right-hand speaker (yet it works fine when listening to other inputs ie. cd or tuner). I thought that maybe i had a dodgy connecting lead so i've just bought a 'premium' quality lead but the same problem persists. The left/right bias control on my laptop is set in the middle position and i'm lost for ideas as to what's causing the problem. Can anyone help please?

Have you tried headphones in the laptop socket?

Try swapping the phono plugs around the input sockets. (left / right)

If the problems remain it is the amp, if it moves, it is the laptop or cable.

It is a stereo cable, with 3 rings yes?

Test with headphones, that is a good idea.

Try wiggling the plug arounf in the laptop socket, it might be a less than tight fit.

I've tried swapping the phono plugs around and now the problem has shifted to the other speaker, so does this mean that the problem is with the laptop rather than the amp?

Laptop or the connection lead.

You now need to try the headphones as suggested above to work out if it's the laptop. The phones off a portable radio/CD player/MP3 player will almost certainly have the correct 3.5mm plug.

When no external sources are connected sound emits from both of the laptop's internal speakers. When using headphones sound only comes through the right earpiece.

Seems to be the laptops 3.5 plug at fault

Just make sure there is no headphone balance control in any sound software you have installed, other than that is the jack plug at fault.

Try using Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices and check out all the tabs and "Advanced" buttons. My RealTec audio, for example allows you to choose mono output and to disable left or right channels in stereo.

Well i've had a good look round Sounds and Audio Devices on the control panel but to no avail, so it does seem like it must be the 3.5mm socket that's at fault. Many thanks to you all for the advice and ideas.
