Help with TV purchase

A friend of mine has offered me his (circa) 4 year old 40" Sony Bravia LCD telly for £250. Thought it sounded ok and as I'm not really in to TV in a big way thought a used one would do the job, however it would appear that his missus has thrown away the base/stand thingy that supports the TV on flat surfaces... Anyway phone Sony to ask about how much a replacment would cost (st loads BTW!) and the guy said that I was paying way to much and he thought more around £150, £200 tops, as it's only 50 hertz (what ever that means).

So my question is, is it a lot of money with it in mind that I have to source a base too?
